Any DSP audio gurus? Amp is blowing its fuse

Hello,

Now, linked to a previous thread, I believe I have a bad voltage regulator which is due to be replaced imminently. However, at the same time as this triggering a DSC fault due to excessive voltage, my speakers died. Changed the fuse today, and the old one was bad, however installing a new one causes it to instantly blow that too.

Anyone with experience of these amps able to shed some light? The well is bone dry so water damage is not a consideration, and obviously with it happening when the alternator was producing excessive voltage makes me think its done some damage to something.

Any suggestions as to where to start? Could it be a damaged cable somewhere causing a short? Damage to the amp internally?

Internal amp damage almost certainly unfortunately.

If so, then I suppose there would be benefits. If the wiring is still all intact I could consider using it as an opportunity to replace the DSP amp and head unit for something a bit more modern...

Well, off to SVT the amp goes, hopefully it’s fixable at a reasonable cost!

Resolved. Failed inverter within the internal power supply. All sorted now, apparently its a weak point of the amp design.

On a side note, how I managed a full month daily driving without music, I don't know!

Contacted a couple of well regarded amplifier repair companies and the common reply was speak to Chris at SVT Services in Edinburgh. Emailed him, explained the problem and he asked me to send it up for a free diagnosis. Power inverter had blown causing a short, which is why it was popping fuses as soon as there was power.
All repaired, for a lot lower price than a replacement amp, and now fitted with a better power unit.

I have quoted this company many times for the last 3 years or so most people ignore it though lol

They are a great company and fixed my amp no problem back in the day for a great price.

Indeed, pain free process and a reasonable price too. Helps that he offers diagnosis free of charge too, so if it was totally borked you'd know before spending anything. Little things that made the service very good.

One for the memory bank. My amp is on the bulkhead though so not sure it will suffer like the ones down by the battery.

An electrical surge doesn't care where the amp is! :poke:

I get what you mean though, typically it is water damage that finishes them. Might relocate mine now that it's freshly repaired, no trace of water in the battery well but you never know what might happen
