So I’m feeling a bit flush these days and feel like treating my whip for its 10th birthday and getting the paint brought back to life.

Bumper needs a complete respray and the bonnet has several stone chips and I’ve been advised to get the whole thing sprayed too. While I’m at it, I’m gonna get the roll hoop covers, wing mirror covers, and front cross bar on the front bumper all sprayed gloss black.

For all of that, I’ve been quoted £750. Does that seem reasonable? It didn't make me whince tbh as I was expecting something like that, but just thought I’d run it past you lot and see what your experience is with this stuff. Would be grateful for any input.

Are they going to blend the bumper and bonnet into the front wings for that price?

Just got quote from my painter to do the hoop covers for £60 and I know he charges £200-£250 for a bumper and I've known him for years. I think its alright as a quote, get him to break up the quote for you.... I bet its £250 for the bumper + £350 for the bonnet and £150 for the other bits. Like the rest of us, running costs have all gone up, materials /power/rates.

That sounds about right cos initially I asked him about the bumper and bonnet only and he quoted £600.

A very good question and one I didn't ask… i will make sure to ask them when I book it in. I sort of assumed that if they get the colour code (Alpine White) and do colour matching there’d not really be an issue. Is that not the case then?

Edit: I also forgot that he’s gonna repair a small patch of rust on the roof and repaint that, so including that in the above, it sounds like maybe it’s a reasonable price for the lot then.

Jon, the roof like the bonnet and the wings are aluminium on the E89, so its not rust. Probably a waste of time but have a chat with BMW about that, don't they have a 12 year anti corrosion warranty, your car is only 10 years old?

Yeah it was reg'd in April 2012. Thanks for the tip. The paint is slightly bubbling so I thought it would be rust, but maybe it's not? I'll go into BMW and see what they say. They'll probably wanna charge me to look at it though I guess... don't know anything about the anti-corrosion warranty so I'm not sure where to start with that. I'll have a look through my paperwork and see what I can find. Thanks!

Thanks mate. I had no idea this was a widespread issue. Hopefully the dealer will approve my warranty claim.

I’ve been using the same paint guy for years. He’s a friend, so decent rates, and would nearly always recommend a blend although it does depend sometimes on angles.

When I look at cars that have had a specific panel painted with no blend it often stands out a mile to me, but I’m not sure everyone sees it. It’s pretty clear with front bumpers though.

Thanks for the tip. I'll definitely ask them to blend it as the last thing I want is a patchwork lookin car.
