OK not so much of a How-To as such, but I did this the other day and it worked so thought I'd put it up here.

So my ashtray lid wouldn't stay down, and I've read and talked to owners where this seems to be a common occurance.
I took my centre console trim off and found the short (about 2cm long) metal bent rod laying underneath the ashtray area. Now I was trying to work out how it actually fitted and this was the complicated bit, but it has a short end bent at 90° and a longer end also bent at 90°. So, as they say, a photo paints a thousand words, here are a few from different angles....

Hope that is of help to someone

Love it when people find fixes and actually tell the rest of us.
Thank you very much.

Thank you!

For my part went though the same process - a discovery process that is - because I fixed this last June, and saw this only now.

To add, you may want to add a piece of tape on the plastic bits that hold the spring. In my case, not only it jumped from its location, it also shorted out the cigarette lighter plug (there were marks on the socket where arcing took place).

Having fixed that, and having replaced the fuse, the socket got power back.
