BMW is continuing it's development of Hydrogen fuelled cars as an alternative to 100% electric and Hybrid cars. Their belief is that there is a strong place for alternative fuel vehicles in the future. It would take just 3 to 4 minutes to fill up to get a range of about 313 miles. This has got to be a winner over 100% electric cars that you need to travel long distances in. Still a long way to go and the infrastructure needs to be in place, but they have made them and they are being tested. A link here for anyone interested.

A great idea, but why such big vehicles.

Toyota developed a hydrogen cell car and were testing it years ago (about 15?). Not heard anything recently.

Can't help thinking of the Betamax and VHS situation all over again!

BMW built a limited number of hydrogen-powered 7 Series back in the early 2000s too, so it's good to see they are still looking at alternatives to electric.

But as firebobby says something a bit smaller might be more useful!

There won't be a 'fight' to have one winner here. BMW sees hydrogen as an alternative to electric, more like diesel and petrol cars co-existing as at present. I agree, to have a choice is exciting and if you don't like all the negatives associated with electric cars, then buy a hydrogen model.

I have always said hydrogen is the way to go. I was in the JCB innovation section not long ago and apart from the small machines majority will be hydrogen.

The manufacture of a hydrogen cell car apparently is not the issue, it's how to produce the hydrogen in sufficient quantities and at a reasonable price point to make it viable.

The Japanese are well ahead of everyone on this, saw a programme a while ago where they had fleets of cars running on the stuff and even a hotel completely powered by hydrogen.

It would stuff the Chinese who have embraced battery technology big style as existing manufacturing of vehicles would have to change very little.

The issue is “green” hydrogen at a sensible cost, currently 95%+ of hydrogen is produced buy reforming natural gas.
One day there will be enough renewable electricity at a low enough cost to be comparable, forget off peak, with battery storage and off peak charging there won’t be any. Too soon for hydrogen

Toyota Mirai hydrogen car is in production costs $50k in the US. They realize their mistake and are now catching up with the EV market with a mediocre Chinese SUV and big plans for a super efficient solid state battery. We will see

Why not a horse - then you'd have back up transport too!

I think cows fart more.
And if you broke down miles from anywhere I'd rather eat a cow than a horse. (And yes I have tried both  )

And yet again the Germans were there first!
