Neighbour hit car

Just had a knock on the door from my next door neighbour who has hit the M when trying to get out of the space next to mine :headbang:

Looks like bumper respray (again) and maybe a wing touch up

Is it best to go through insurance or settle with cash and don't inform them if he is up for it?

Bloody annoying, I'm sure he can't have caused any proper damage at such a slow speed but these SUV's weigh a ton

If you are on good terms with the neighbour ask if they want to pay for it or go through the insurance.
Get a quote done form a body shop and see what they say.

Ouch, nasty. Quite possible if you do go through insurance, given the market right now, the'll Cat N it. So for me, I'd try the cash route, but it's a lottery as to whether your neighbour is up for it or not. Good luck.

Do I see a mark on the wheel as well?

Looking at his / her damage, I would expect them to go through their insurance to get their car fixed as that is not going to be cheap either, in which case they would not want to pay cash for something that is always going to be more than they expect.

Yes I noticed that, will check. Yes I agree can't see him wanting to stump up 2k, hopefully if it's all sorted through his insurance my no claims/premiums won't go up too much

Who are you with again insurance wise? When Admiral recorded a non fault for no damage / no claim (not sure why the other person reported it to their insurance when they hit our parked Jeep in the car park when my wife was sitting it in), they added well over £2k to the premium on my cars so I had to remove my wife from some of the cars.

A Z4M shouldn’t be written off for the damage shown a body shop will fix that cheaply, there is a big price difference when selling a Cat N (25-35%) car so avoid that at all costs, I would push for a cash settlement.

A friend had his Toyota damaged by a third party their insurance wrote it off and paid £8k, he then bought it back for £4k, it cost £800 to fix the damage but the car had a Cat N label, I’m not sure it was a good deal.

He could only have been going 3-5 mph so I'm hopeful it is just cosmetic

A tricky one. If you go through the insurance then both parties have to declare it when the insurance is renewed, even if you were not to blame, and your neighbour will lose their no-claims bonus. Their damage is substantial, from a cost repair, so I would go through their insurance.

I’m no expert but I’d think £800 ish to fix yours if there’s nothing structural and you’ve no wheel damage.

At least they admitted it too…lots wouldn’t these days.

Shame for you though of course.

Have decided to go through insurance. And will try and get it repaired at BMW.

Yes I think you are probably close, I said to him £400 to £1000 when I first saw damage, but reckon can add £50 on for a wheel refurb (good spot PVR). Maybe a good excuse to get all 4 done at the same time! (Which I will pay for of course)

Hopefully Mr Tidy will be on soon, as he has some background in insurance. My understanding is that you should just hold the neighbour responsible, claim off him directly and it’s up to him to get his insurer involved. There should not be any need to involve your insurer who will inevitably bump up premiums etc. I may be wrong though.
