How to remove hardtop?

Please could someone help?
I've recently bought a lovely 53plate 2.5i I'm over the moon with my new car BUT...
I asked if I could take the hardtop off to try out the motor in the softtop no-one at the garage knew how... so drove up the road where "someone could help me" but no-one there knew how either!
So I then drove to my local BMW dealer in Bath and no-one there knew how either...
Do I need a "special tool"? or is a 7mm Allen key okay for the job?
According to the BMW dealer they used to sell them but now they are discontinued!
I NEED to test the roof motor ASAP so that I can get it fixed at the garage's expense and not mine!
Any help will be very much appreciated.
(sorry if it's a really blond question but I didn't want to go poking around with no-idea at all in case I break something!)
