Perhaps if you remove the pedestrian off your bonnet, the fault might clear itself

Sorry but I couldn't resist. I've not had this issue before, so hope its a simple fix.

Booked in for next week. For those that are confused apparently the pedestrian protection system pops the bonnet up to make it bouncy if you hit a pedestrian. I currently have a red warning up saying it isn't working so drive carefully, don't open the bonnet, and get it checked out at service centre. Should be under warranty although I really take exception being told I'll be charged if it turns out to not be a warranty claim particularly are fault is intermittent.......

Is your car a USA spec'd Z4? I haven't seen this promoted anywhere in the UK!

Hmmmm interesting. The R35 GTR has a similar issue which was causing an error message saying it was to pop the bonnet but there was a probes with the system, turned out that even the littlest bump to the front of the car even by someone in a car park caused the fault and Nissan charged customers £11k to fix.

I do hope it's not caused due to a bump and bmw can find and fix the issue under warranty.

Well considering first the bonnet hasn't popped up which it would if it triggered from a bump, and second it'd intermittent I too am hoping it's a fault under warranty and not a bump. There is zero evidence of a bump nothing at all.

My money is on:

Bmw delete the error code,
open bonnet
close bonnet
job done.
Why is it that people who can't take advice always insist on giving it?

Pedestrian protection system fault

I had this pop up when I removed the bonnet handle to get at the plastic trim housing the lower right speaker off.
Soon as handle was reattached and bonnet reclosed, warning went away.

Had this in my XKR....when you opened the bonnet there were 2 huge rams that threw the bonnet up and the pedetrian with it and with a bit of luck they didnt scratch the roof as they flew over it.
Cleared the code down and never saw it again
