Myself and the OH are looking at doing a bit of a road trip next year. The plan at the moment is to head down to the Black forest area and work our way along the German/Swiss/Austrian border to the Salzburg area. It's not going to be a full on road trip as we are planning on doing some walking/hiking and some sight seeing as well, we will have about 8 to 10 days in the area and thought 3 or 4 destinations would be about right.

Any pointers on things to see, places to go/stay and of course roads to drive would be gratefully received.

Berchtesgaden is a must see if nearby, the Kelstein, Hitlers gaff at the top of the mountain and the bus ride up to it is a must do/see.

Yes quite agree the Eagles nest is a must. Also try to do the Gloss Glockner alpine pass.we did these on our motorbike a few years back. Which has now been replaced by the Z and have to say its been a great replacement still getting the open air thrill but in more comfort,

We've just visited Freiburg im Breisgau and Lindau on the Bodensee, both were lovely. The castles at Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau in Bavaria are also well worth looking at.

I have done German-orientated road trips a few times before. Assuming you may not have been before, so a few thoughts/ideas (in no particular order)

Remember that you have to pay tax if driving Austrian or Swiss roads. Swiss road tax I buy here online in advance, it is about £35 and lasts a whole year. Austrian road tax you can buy at most petrol stations near the border, they call it the vignette - you can pay for 10 days tax, it is cheap - about £8 if memory serves.

Petrol is cheaper in Switzerland than Germany, Austria or France.

You can find the cafe serving the original black forest gateau in a village called Triberg, in the heart of the black forest. Also a very large waterfall is nearby.

There is an excellent hotel in Salzburg called the "Turnerwirt" - nothing fancy, but looks fun and traditional, is dirt cheap, has a free car park right next door and a bus stop outside that takes you directly into the old town.

I have not done it but the Eagles Nest tour looks amazing.

If you haven't done it, the BMW factory in Munich is excellent, I haven't done the factory tour but the museum is great and if you ask nicely they'll let you park your car outside the museum for a photo. I've got one of me and my car - very proud (Not the zed though )

From the black forest to salzburg, you'd probably be going around Munich anyway

Swiss vignette only required if you drive on the motorways, not if you do not touch those.

+1 on Neuschwanstein Schloss, Lindau and BMW Welt.
If you end up being near Zurich and haven't been there before you should go. I used to live there and it's still one of my favourite places.

Agree with the comments on visiting the Eagles Nest and Bodensee. If you are in the Salzburg region (try lofer-nice ski village) with snow on the ground, a night time horse drawn sledge tour is also fantastic.

Check out the romantic road, although I suspect you will find it hard to avoid anyway. I did it in my Uzz32 a few years ago. Stunning road 200 miles long I think.
