And this is the free-sprung balance of the watch that's on my wrist most days. Certainly one of the best movements ever made.

Like the classic Elgin.

Something we don't see much today is painted dials like this Girard Perregaux. Maybe they wouldn't sell?

Ah really, what sites did you find them on? Apparently I'm terrible at searching for US prices.

Googled it, or try chrono24.com List prices on most watches in the UK are negotiable, just not Rolex from Rolex agents but others.
The US listings is already mentioned on this thread already and German dealers are also good

My Max Bill arrived this lunchtime, have to say it's even better in the metal. The movement is the workhorse of the watch industry ETA Valioux 7750

Did the Max Bill come from TZ-UK?

Whatever, it is, as you say, a very good watch 'in the flesh'.

Another old (and quite rare) Girard Perregaux with day of the week and month in windows at the top and date around the outside of the dial indicated by a 3rd hand.

The only reason that vintage watches aren't more popular today is the difference in size - the trend has been to larger and larger watches, culminating in the mine-is-bigger-than-yours attitude of makes like Panerai. Most 50s - 60s watches were around 34 mm across (not including crown). Modern watches, especially of the Panerai style, can be 44-45 mm and you can get over 50 mm on the ones that look like pocket computers strapped to your wrist. Not a fan. I like around 42 mm or so. In the watch collecting world, we have a saying - 'The bigger the watch, the smaller the......' And there seems to be something to it as the guys with wrist weights for watches do seem to be driving Vipers, Corvettes, etc. as if they are compensating for something. Not BMWs, of course!

Another of my vintage watches that I use - Omega 'Piepan' Constellation with 'beads of rice' original band

I know where you are coming from wspohn, bought this for the wife last summer, it's her birth year 56 but back then it was a gents size 33mm. It had been in a collection and hardly used mint but great patina on the dial, which is rare honeycomb and also alternate roulette date wheel

There, fixed that for ya....
Personally I've found that apart from a small number of 'look at me' types as you described, most people buy watches that simply look good on them. My 'sweet spot' for watches is about 42mm but I can go bigger (within reason) no problem as I don't have dainty wrists. I have tried several vintage watches but they all look like children's watches on me, so too small can be as bad as too big in the world of watches. I'd like to pickup a vintage Autavia or Navitimer some day, as they look about the right size, but prices have gone beyond silly so probably won't happen.
