The code is parking brake malfunction think it needs a dealer or independent to diagnose. Do a search here for "help park brake stuck " lots of info in it

Many people with handbrake problems have needed a software update from BMW could it be this :?

I don't use the handbrake very often as the car is stored in my garage sometimes for a few weeks at a time and don't want the pads glueing on. I realise that mechanical mechs are generally best used frequently so I'm wondering if I'm storing up future problems with the mechanism?

Yes, likely to just be a software update required. A software update done by the dealer fixed mine the other week.
Really, BMW should be recalling the Z4 for this update as I would argue it's a safety issue, especially considering the number of Z4's with the issue - my handbrake would not activate at all when the fault appeared.
One bonus, my Idrive now has 7 digit postcodes working after the update. When BMW updated the software they also updated the Idrive operating system.

My iDrive will only allow 4 digits, almost making it useless.
My business partner traded in at Mercedes her Zed when the ebrake failed, it was the final straw of problems.
