So other than the 'huge jolt' which sounds like a 'massive' problem... (I'm guessing you don't get a 'huge' jolt but that you feel a slight movement as drive train slack is taken up) I'd suggest that your car is perhaps DCT? If so, this sound is normal and is the mechatronics in the transmission, valves, solenoids etc that control flow of fluids to clutches and so forth. Again, entirely normal, especially when the DCT is inches away from you. Just think of it as it buckling its belt ready to go! If not a DCT and a normal auto then I can't help as I've not owned one of the normal auto boxes and therefore I couldn't be certain what noise levels to expect from its mechatronics.

ok thanks. yes it's DCT. i should add that most of the metal clicking and popping sounds like it's coming from the brakes. i have to admit it's a bit unsettling.

I have a DCT and get the clicks and clunks too; I'd just assumed it was the gearbox pre-selecting the next gear on the unused clutch?
