Had a similar issue in my 3.0si - when I let the clutch up in 1st I could sense a similar slight thud/clunk - if it's the same thing, my independent specialist diagnosed it immediately and stripped and lubed my prop shaft connection (I think). Sorted it for us and it wasn't an expensive fix, in any case and he said it was very common and a known issue.

Hope you find the same

Does it do it in reverse as well, mine did before I sorted (applied a special grease) to the propshaft

It's been best part of 2 years since I did mine, I seem to remember its a special type of loctite lube, think it was called 660 and you apply to the splined shaft. Basically the paste takes up minute gaps between the threads that is causing the clunking when they come into contact when you first move off. I bought it online, as ever its cheaper than the dealer.

My E60 M5 did this. Drove me mad. Sometimes it was really very loud so I sympathise. It was under BMW warranty back then hence I had a similar procedure done to rectify it at BMW.
