My 2006 Z4MR is due an inspection1 (69k mls), the local BMW dealer has quoted £231, seems a bit cheap, too cheap! Although not as major as inspec 2, it's still a major service. Worried about getting a decent job done. I recently had the brakes discs/pads replaced so those are excluded.

They're obviously never going to do the clearances for that price...so get them to confirm, in writing, what WILL be done for that price.

Then when you pick it up afterwards and ask for the valve clearance report, and they tell you that you haven't paid for it, then you can show them their written quote.

Another way to check is to ask how long the inspection will take. If it's an hour then it's basically an extended oil service. 4 hours an it should be a proper Inspection.

That's way two cheap. Main dealer oil service for an ///M under is value plan is £199

Inspection one includes valve clearances, among other things. £500 is probably nearer and that's probably Indy price.

Seems too cheap to me to. I paid over £800 last time at a main dealer. As said check that they are doing the valve clearance check and ask for the figures.

Been back to the dealer and had to almost insist that the Inspection 1 was more to it than an oil change, after some kerfuffle some bod came on the line and said that I was right, valve clearances would be checked and that would be £619 please sir! Knew I was wasting my time saying that the quote was originally £231, apparently the guy I had originally booked with was new and unaware of Z4M specialities! Not good, they need to be trained up straight off.

Then you go back and ask then to do works upon first quote buddy
Their issue not Yours

I feel inspection 1 is a waste of money
It's oil and filter £199 at mo
And pollen filter £55 +vat
The rest is checks !
Sorry at £619+ at bmw I'm not paying £300 for someone to visually check my car
As I know it's mint so they could do anyone's id say in max 30 mins

So I've got them to price valves check and adjust £500
Oil And filter £199 and they will do the checks anyway so
To me it's an inspection 2 for £700 at main dealer not £1300!
As I've don't diff and box with new plugs myself and full Hunter

So all good there and insp2 when bought car on 10k, 3 years ago then oil and filter every 3k

What about the labour cost for a couple of hours for the valve clearances...yes you could call it just a 'check', but one most of us would consider necessary.

My local dealer in Liverpool would charge over £120/hour, plus about £5 per shim.

Yes, and two hours would be pretty quick for the valve clearances.....or I'm too slow/thorough.

If in ref to me buddy
Inspection 1 does not do valves
Only inspection 2

Hence £300 worth of checks for an inspection 1

So I'm having valves oil and both filter done plus plugs whilst there for £700 @ main dealer

That to me makes far more sense

And yet, even when it's in black and white, I know very few owners on here that received reports. Yes, I know the point you'll make - "don't ask, don't get". But why should we have to ask a main dealership of the manufacturer/brand we own to include something they have deemed necessary to include in their servicing schedule?! Bonkers.

On an M the Inspection 1 and 2 services both check and adjust the valve clearances, hence the high price to pay someone to do it. :)

Dealer now says Inspection 1 does not do valves, check or otherwise!! That's Inspection 2 only.

As others have mention an Insp1 should always have a valve clearance check.

The £600-£700 for an Insp1 at a dealer isn't an issue for me - although I now use a specialist - but I don't know how they can justify another £500 to upgrade to an Insp2...when they're only adding another hours labour and £150 of parts.

I now just get an annual Insp2 at my specialist (don't bother with an Insp1 anymore as I have plenty of interim oil changes in the year) for about the same price as a Insp1 at a dealer.

Perhaps you should refer them to the doc above and politely take your business elsewhere.... to an indy who has some idea about the car they are about to work on with your money.
