Z4 newbie here. Looking for a garage/funday car with the legs to go on holiday. I'm no mechanic so the local specialist will be looking after it. The boss (who shall approve all) is really after a black 3.0i with 70k or less on it. I think the rag tops over slick tops as they have more boot space.

Never driven one, but a couple of questions if I may:
2.5/3 is there really heaps of difference? Not too worried about fuel consumption as it's not a daily driver, and 150/190 bhp is probably enough (no racer here)
I've long legs so in most cases have the seat almost to full travel - it looks like there is heck of a blind spot with the top up, any comments?

Anyway, still selling her current garage car but if the rain stops that should go this weekend. Then I can search and spend in earnest.

Hi and welcome to the forum Barry. I'm 5.6 and I fit OK
Plenty of lanky gits on here and they seem to fit, so you should be OK. Where are you based, you could blag a ride with a local owner and see what you think.
I have the 3.0 and love it..as most do, can't comment on the 2.5.
This weekend is Zedfest which is at Loughbourgh, good chance to see lots of different Z's

Welcome.

Ive had 3x 2.5's and 2x 3.0's and personally not found much difference at all between them in terms of performance. The biggest consideration is if buying a 2003-2006 2.5 (190bhp) is you will be constantly fishing for that missing 6th gear.
They introduced the 6th gear on the facelift Z4 (2006 - 2009) but produced two models. The 177bhp SE and the Si which was about c210bhp I beleive. The 177bhp model is the one to avoid unless it scores on all your other criteria.

Good luck with your search

Welcome and enjoy the search I wouldn't rule out a 3.0 as it would widen your search

If I understand you correctly regarding boot space, if you are comparing the E85 soft top with the E86 coupe then the coupe has the bigger boot space.

Welcome aboard. :)

The 3.0 ltr cars are the most popular E85 gen models. Plenty of power and decent fuel economy for those trips away. Less stressed than the smaller engines, which helps make them a fine reliable car for the most part. leg room is very good in the Z4. Go for sports seats if you can, they have far better support under the knees.

Hi, no I was comparing the convertible rag top with the metal folding roof, most of which seems to sit in the boot. Coupes are fun and fine but I like an open top (my Funday is a Mercedes CLK) but she wants a BMW z4, and I'm looking forward to being allowed to drive it.

Thanks for the welcome. Hopefully the good weather will get her MINI rag top gone and some serious searching. Typical there were quite a few for sale locally 8 months ago now nothing. :)

Ah right - the E89 is a totally different animal. I'm with you regarding open top motoring :driving:

And the MINI is gone... So now I can seriously look at Autotrader / for sale ads :)
