Do we need to know....

Do we need to know when the topic was originally posted?

At present it says "posted by <user> on <date>"

Would it be as well to remove the "on date" bit, to un-clutter it a little?

Here's what it would look like (you may have to expand your browser a little or it'll look naff):

As it is now:

As it would be:

I don't get on here every day so I like the date. I like to know if I'm looking at an old thread or new one.

To add my 2 cents,,,, as if I don't do that often enough :P ,,, If the board is going to be around for awhile (and it will), it is important to know when an old topic has been resurrected to prevent some issues that I have seen happen on other forums.

I don't see the need - it still tells you when the thread was last updated, which will give you an idea how active it is..

Who cares when it was started!

wait a minute...Did I vote on this?
Oh yeah this is the one from earlier today! Whew! Good thing the start date was on there or I would have never known!
:D

Personally I think it looks too cluttered... and there is a feature on the board to prevent people bumping too old topics i.e. if they post in a topic over a month old it doesn't bring it to the top... would that help?

I say go halfway on this... remove the timestamp, but keep the date that the thread was started.

Damn, was hoping nobody would suggest that, LOL!... It's actually not as simple as it sounds to split the two.

Yes, that woud work! It would keep people from assuming that it is a brand new topic, and life will go on :)

Why do we need two dates in the summary though?

If we remove the date the thread is created we can still see the date of the last post - which if it is a new, or untouched thread, will show the date of the original post. I can't understand why people want to see the date a thread was created in the summary. Surely all that matters is whether it is currently active - ie: what the date/time of the last post was? If you really want to know the creation date, go in the thread and look! :P

Sorry, I just prefer the cleaner look... :D

I agree... and currently we have the bump threshold set to 10 days... so if someone has posted in a thread > 10 days old it won't bump to the top.

Hope this helps.

1st, I see no need for the OP date.... last post date is the most important one.

Also-
JMO, but why such a short interval on a bump.
Especially relating to tech discussions, it would make sense to keep the topic condensed to one thread.

eg. if there's an old discussion about 2nd gear tranny issues;
wouldn't it make sense to be able to bump it up if you have a similar problem?
I would think there'd be fewer redundant postings.

Agree on the bump part. If a thread suddenly becomes active again because there's a new post, I'd like to see it at the top as I don't always use the "New Posts since last visit" option.

Actually, can't think of a reason why you'd not want a (re?)active topic to be bumped up the list?

Hahaha, I threw my two cents in and now you're 50/50.

I would suggest keeping the dates because you can properly track when someone last posted in the thread. I have yet to see a truly valid reason for removing it. If there is concern over it looking cluttered. I would suggest another option. Possibly, putting the thread title in bold and bumping it up one font size.

ok, I will remove the bump thing... to be honest I never set it, it was on by default... it may not have even been that behaviour it was referring to.

As for bumping the font size, that won't work, it'll all go out of kilter and there is not the screen real estate for it.

People complain it's too cluttered... I try to do something about it and people complain... guess I'll leave the voting to do the talking.

Not sure that people actually read the posted date though... to put it into context, we never had it on the Version 2 forum.

See, I really like the V2 layout there...

Just put it back Sp3ctre... and see who complains (no-one, I bet) :P
