Experience with Eibachs and Tyre Sizes

Hi Everyone

Read a lot on this forum but a bit shy about posting!

After the usual cracked spring I swapped over to Eibach springs last year and have been very happy with the results.

The car is now 5 years old and the M3 tyres are reaching the wear bar after 20,000 miles. Would ideally like to go for Michelin Pilot Super Sports but after a few searches I can't seem to find anyone with experience of 265/40 R18 rears with the lowered Eibach set up.

Does anyone run Eibachs with non-standard tyre sizes that they would recommend? The local tyre fitter is full of scare stories about shredding the rears.

Thanks in advance

I reckon you'll be fine. What are you worried about exactly?

On another note, how the hell can you people get such high mileage out of a set of tires?? Mine barely last half a year!

my current ps2's and they look battered @ 3000 miles!!! lol infact they have melted in places

20000 miles is awesome get ya moneys worth!!

masterbm, I run 265/40-18's on the rear of my ///M and without any problem what so ever. I also run 235/45-18's on the front and again no issues at all. One benefit of that combination is a spot on speedometer.

Thanks for the replies, the concern seems to be that with the lowering from the Eibachs of around 20mm F and 10mm R then adding a bigger diameter tyre might cause rubbing particularly over fast bumps. Could cut the tyre he says, hard to be sure. Suggested I ask someone who has actually run that size on lowered Eibachs.

As for the mileage I don't know. Maybe because I have to take it easy most of the time due to how busy the roads are. But for the track time I reckon the the M3 tyres would do a whole lot more. Maybe a bit hard a compound for the car?

If anyone can positively confirm Eibachs + non-std tyres sizes I would be most grateful.

Cheers

The diameter difference is a 7 mm in tire/wheel diameter. That amounts to 3.5 mm closer at the top and each side. 3.5 mm is pretty small effective increase so take at look at the amount of room you have now and see just how tight it is.

I run standard suspension, but there are 2 corners at the 'Ring where the offside rear slightly rubs (T13 & Wehrseifen). These are both quite sharp downhill left-hand bends though.

I've taken the wheels off and looked for signs of rubbing but can't see any marks on the liner/arch/tyre/suspension (checked all 4 corners) so don't know what's rubbing.

Don't have a problem on normal roads, nor where I live that has speed bumps every 50m.

On the downside your suspension will be lower than mine and might rub more - but the Eibachs might limit the suspension travel a bit more than OEM suspension and thus reduce the chances of rubbing.

The PSS has a very square shoulder/sidewall - just like a race tyre - and is wider for its claimed size than the equivalent Continental/Pirelli/Goodyear (which probably helps give it a bit of extra grip in itself), so that will contribute to the chances of it rubbing.

A SportContact 3/5 in the same size might have a more rounded carcass and thus won't rub at all - but it'd be trial & error.
