Fitting genuine BMW reversing sensors

Hi All

At the weekend I picked up my first Z4 - a 2003 3.0i 6 speed. It needs a little TLC, one of the jobs being a respray of some nasty scuff marks on the rear bumper. However, I thought I could instead get a replacement bumper from a breakers as that might prove cheaper. I have found one in the right colour that has the reversing sensors fitted. I'd quite like the car to have reversing sensors, but does anyone know how tricky a job it would be to actually install it all? I imagine I would need a module, but wouldn't know where to start in terms of where that goes, where it connects and if it is even capable of being a plug and play job?

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks!

That's great, thanks very much indeed. Looks like it might be a garage job after all! Wonder if it becomes somewhat easier/quicker if I only have rear reversing sensors.

Well they only came with rears as standard.
With the age of your car you may find some of the required loom already in place.

Thanks enuff-zed. If I were to find some of the required loom on removing the original bumper (non-reversing sensor one), would it just be plug and play or have I misunderstood?

Never done it myself but pretty sure there's a module you'd need to get too.
I doubt just removing the bumper would show any loom.
I think you'd need to follow the sensor cables back inside the car to where they all meet up with one loom. So hopefully that single bit would be there?

Here's the layout.
The module fits in the right rear corner of the boot somewhere.
I think you'll need that and the loom to the sensors.
Then hope the other plugs for the module are already there.
Not sure what happens at the front, whether it uses an existing 'beeper'?

Thanks for that and sorry for the very slow reply!

I can see that the modules are pretty easy to obtain. I am unsure where the module would plug into in the car itself (if there will be plugs waiting) and if it would need to be coded into the car at all. If anyone knows that would be a massive help. Thanks!

The PDC uses the standard gong unit under the steering column. All BMWs of this vintage get one of those.

Thanks for that. So it could be as simple as getting a PDC unit,.connecting the reversing sensor cables to that and the PDC to the gong, or would some sort of coding still be required? Thanks.

hi, i fitted new sensors and module this summer straight forward really the module is dead easy to fit and once you've got the bumper off just a matter of pushing the new sensors in , then reconnect and bumper back on job done. good luck hope you find it as easy as i did . :) Merry Christmas.

I don’t think the kit is available any longer so for folks who don’t have these in their car it seems that they are out of luck.

Hi

Did you fit the new sensors in a bumper that already had the holes already in? If so what kit did you order? Thanks.

Wish I could but it seem so long ago now, iv had a look but cant fined anything. If something comes up I'll send you the link ,they are the angled one NOT the straight ones hope that helps .

No worries. So just to be clear, did you have a bumper that had PDC sensors factory fitted that you replaced with a sensor kit from eBay?
