Frozen Grey - Solid Black or Diamond Cut / Black alloys

Just got an M40i in Frozen Grey. It has the full gloss black shadow line pack and came with 799 M style alloys in gloss black.. I’m not sure about the alloys and am thinking about getting them changed to diamond cut / gloss black. Any thoughts?

Iirc they are already diamond cut under the paint. Personally out of the two pictures I prefer the black but I'm biased, your car, your choice

Problem with the diamond cut alloys is if they get curbed, the channel that runs along the spoke gets cut into during the refurb process and can dissappear towards the edge of the rim, wheel then looks odd. I didn't like the look of them and had the wheels done in shadow chrome

I would change the colour to satin black. I am afraid I don't like gloss black wheels. As said diamond cut can lead to problems if you curb them.

I prefer the current ones with the frozen grey, which is very nice btw

...is your badging black with chrome outline?

Do you mean you prefer the gloss black ones that are currently on the car. I really didn’t like them to begin with but they are growing on me slowly. So I’ve decided to stick with them for time being before spending £400 or thereabouts to have them diamond cut. I actually prefer the 800 M style so may just bide my time and pounce if a set ever turn up on eBay.

I had the car fully ppf’d last week and got the badges switched from silver to genuine BMW gloss black at the same time. They are solid black without any chrome edging.

Your choice, personally I think black gloss goes well with SF red, plus they are cheaper to refinish than diamond cut when they get kerbed.

Always going to get both options supported when asking an opinion. Sometimes you need to go with your heart… if it helps, I’m in the ‘polished’ camp, but only because I don’t like black alloys (and having owned white on a Mini, which cost a fortune, I don’t like them either mainly because of the CONSTANT cleaning).

Enjoy your car. And share the images of your final decision and of you enjoying your great car.

All black alloys IMO are now a dated look, getting them laser cut will not be as good as original as they have to paint in detail, this was my solution 20240601_222537.jpg

shadow chrome, I've tried a very very dark metallic grey (nearly black) on my old E89 and kind of regretted it, the detail of the wheel disappear. For me this is the goldilocks zone, not too dark, not too light

Our E89 has shadow chrome applied to the 326M alloys. Went with the refurb company recommendation and love them.

Perfect zedbaron. I had the full black wheels on my i8 diamond cut to turn them into another version of the original wheel. It has to be done very well as lacquer peel is common. Mine are still good but another set on a 2 Series were clearly done in a hurry and deteriorated after a year. As such I would never have my wheel diamond cut again but would go along the route of zedbaron. And yes when you kerb them you can only go so far before the wheel is toast……

Seconded

[ref]Zed Baron[/ref], what style alloys are those? I've been exploring different options for a new winter set up as I do not want to add 255/35 R19's on the back as they are a smaller diameter than current and I have been looking a set of 18" 798M's and getting them refurbished gloss back but I think shadow chrome would be great too.
