Mr 12 Volt MMI MOST box, glitch problem solved !

So after a day of testing the CarPlay side works well, subject to some bugs with audio stopping haphazardly when changing apps but…the big issue is that the CIC display glitches very badly when accessing BMW side of things..so MMI display is rock steady and clear..the BMW native side is pretty much unusable ..I’ve checked , removed and re-inserted all connections..if I restore the the normal wiring the CIC display is normal.

Weird…any ideas?

Here is it glitching..

Here it is in CarPlay mode working well…

It sounds like either a problem with the LVDS cable connection to the MMI unit or a problem with the unit itself.
From what I’ve read there is a WhatsApp contact number for there customer services, I’m don’t know if it’s in the instructions because I haven’t read mine 😁 ( I’m am a bloke after all) or perhaps online, but apparently they’re pretty good at getting back to you.

The WhatsApp is on their home page

Hi Chippie, I’ve sent a detailed report to their WhatsApp number..I spoke to them overnight cancelling my earlier ‘ message.. :tumbleweed:

So I’ve sent them the same report and pics…today..

It certainly seems to be something to do with the LVDS cable or the logic in the ox..pity cause the CarPlay / Android display is rock solid..

The very bad glitch with native screens glitching horribly…spent hours swapping cables and various things to no avail…after long chat with Mr12 Volt support and various suggestions a factory reset via the system screen seemed to resolve it…

Now considering locating the box somewhere more accessible to allow for firmware reloads and hard resets etc.

I positioned mine in the small gap between the transmission tunnel and the bottom of the lower dash, there’s just enough room to squeeze the box and cables in, plus it’s only 3 screws to take out and remove the lower cover in the passenger footwell.

I'll have a look at that now

Does it get cooling in there?

My other thought was the glove box..

Thnx for the tip..

Does it get cooling in there?

That was my only concern, I’m not sure how warm the box gets but at least the holes/vents at each end aren’t obstructed.

The box runs pretty warm…it has lots of cooling vents…had it running in the open in a cool-ish garage for several hours and it was definitely warm..if not hot.. :tumbleweed:

Well my euphoria rapidly disappeared…..

Seems as the box heats up the worse the glitching gets..

Confirmed by putting box in fridge then monitoring temp and observing the glitching…

Definitely sounds like a faulty box, personally I'd recommend insisting that it is replaced.

As for updates,

Firmware (MCU) update - This is performed via the on-board microSD card slot, full access to the box is required. The last Firmware update was October 2022.
Software update - This is performed via USB connection, a lot easier to perform as you don't need to get to the box. I've been informed that this is only really required if there is a problem with the software, ie; compatibility issues.

Did they suggest a software (USB) update?

Ah, okay. Makes sense. I installed an MMI in my 2016 Mini Clubman but thats an F car and iDrive4. £200 delivered and easy/glitch free.

No they didn’t…I didn’t see any references to s/w updates via USB?

Just firmware updates via microSD card..which I did to the latest version..

They’ve gone strangely quiet now ref box and warranty..fortunately I bought it May 2022 so it’s still under warranty..

It’s very irritating as it impinges on my other upgrade plans as now with all the centre console out and other disconnects I can’t move the roof to get access to the boot etc… :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:
