Painting the Brake Disc Hub -

I have always disliked the unfinished and dirty area of the Brake Disc Hub that the Alloy Wheels mounts to. You have the great looking BMW style _ _ _ wheel with a couple inches of dirty greasy grey metal and then the bright brake rotor surface.

It was a nice Saturday at home (wife out of town) so I set out to spend some "quality time" with my Z4 and give this area a cleaner look -

This is what I think looks so bad -

This is how it looks now -

I cleaned the full hub with alcohol, and then masked the brake rotor and caliper & pad assembly. I used "Dupli-Color" Engine Enamel spray paint, semi-flat -

Removing the masks, painting was complete. I applied "Clean wheel mates" to avoid wheel sticking to the hub.
Before mounting the wheel I used "303 Protectant" to clean the wheel well surfaces.

Remounted wheels. The only project remaining is cleaning and painting the calipers Gloss BLACK. I am saving this as a separate project for when I get the Chrome Clips that 20Ducks is working on getting us on a group buy.

I chose Black paint for a couple reasons but mostly because my Z4 is Black. This might be a good place to introduce your body paint color or the color of your calipers!

While I had the wheels off, I cleaned off the glue from old wheel weights (just bought a set of Michelin PS2s) and waxed the inner wheel.

John Burke "JBZ4" called just before starting this and he jumped in his car and drove two hours from Amelia Island to keep me company and show me his NEW 2007 Metallic Green Z4. We drove his car on an errand and it was great! Thanks John!

A nice Saturday project and visit from a brother Z4 owner!

Looks great, Jack. Clips are going to the platers late this week. He told me the lead time will be 2-4 weeks.

btw, I only have 2 sets of "M" clips, you have dibs (The plater will confirm prices as a job lot so stay tuned for pricing) on one of those if the price is right. The other will be on a first ordered basis. I am not processing any 3.0si clips.

Greg - I need the 206 & 66 for my 2005 3.0i ! I don't have M anymore - assumed on Swapalease.

Make sure I am on list to get first sets !

Thanks!

What a great job! Nice attention to detail. I'm also considering painting my calipers, but my Z is Maldives Blue and I'm thinking that will look a bit much for a caliper/body color match. I also like the red like shipkiller's. But i think in the end Black is the way to go as to avoid a clash with the Blue. Looks good Jack!

Red is always a good choice no matter what color body. I have seen red look very good on Maldaves Blue. With red calipers, you can paint the hub black, Silver or red. Post some pics when you do it.

Nice job.

I like the idea of the clean wheel mates. Never heard of them before but they are a great idea as alloys really do bond to cast iron hubs.

Interesting, aren't they! I bought them a while back from Bavarian Autosport http://www.bavauto.com. They are about $20 + shipping now.

Great job, you inspire me to do the same. I am going to put new breaks on my Zed when the time comes and do what you have done here. I wonder if those clean wheel mates, are available at local auto parts stores? Also I noticed how nice you garage floor looks, is that just the way it came, or did you put something down? :driving:

Go ahead and order the wheel mates from http://www.bavauto.com - then you have them!

I painted the floor with "Rust-ole-um Garage Floor Shield" paint set from Home Depot - Beige or Grey. Didn't use flecks. It was the day after closing and new construction. Swept it real good but no water or acid before. Waited three days to drive on it. I still had some some paint lift off from hot sticky tires.

When I need to spend serious money on brakes after the warranty, I am going to upgrade brakes too.

Thanks for the info on the paint. I will put that on my long list of home projects I have to do. :)
