Poor starting

Any thoughts? It’s a variable issue but essentially engine will crank over but not fire. Sometimes it just takes several cranks sometimes nothing but will if you stop and turn the key again.

No codes are being shown in any of the memories I can scan

Car runs fine. No lumpy idle. Not missing. Fuel consumption is not down.

Battery is tested and good, alternator seems to be outputting fine

Disa is operating as expected

Plugs seem ok no obvious fouling (they are the 4 prong electrode type)

Not sure what to look at next

Does it do it (not start) during specific times of the day? I had a 2005 Z4 that would start in the morning fine, but after it got hot, would take a couple of tries to start.

Is this your daily driver, or does it sit between drives?

Ah yes should’ve said… cold start mostly. I’m defining cold start as when the cars been off for a good few hrs deffo am and pm going too and from work.

I’m kinda thinking now to look at fuel pump or spark. It does it even if I let the pump prime. Need to see if I can check to see if it’s sparking
Just the fact that there is no issue when running makes me think it’s not these

Double check the battery by using jumper cables to the jumping points in the engine bay, using a doner car with a known good battery. After installing the cables let the doner car sit for a while running and charging the battery in the Z. With the doner car still running and the jumper cables still attached try starting the Z. If the Z still has the same problem starting you may need a new starter switch.

You advised you found no codes and a failing starter switch will not cause a code. Starter switches are neither hard to install and are not costly.

Check the earth cable in the boot for rusting. I would be tempted to buy a can of Easy Start from Toolstation, £5.59, and use it when the engine is cold. if it fires straight away then it is a fuel problem.

Battery has been tested by a battery place but I’ll give it a go.

Terminals are clean…

I am having an issue with one of my keys not working properly, I assumed it was the battery in it cos it won’t lock/unlock the car but will start it fine (well fine ish lol) but if I use the key for a few days it does bring the unlock function back.

A Switch does sound a contender as it is just like rely isn’t kicking in but once it does it’s fine like an immobiliser isn’t clicking off the first time
