Really worried

Posting here because I can......

Got a call very late last night from the Glasgow vet hospital (thanks to microchip). Someone had taken one of my cats there after being struck by a car. Visited him early this morning at around 00:30.....dazed, confused and bleeding from the nose and mouth.
He's made it through the night. CT Scans and x-rays today, followed by an operation to to fix both his upper and lower jaws which are broken and split. Thankfully no organ or spine damage.
Still possibility of brain damage which may show up as a result of the anaesthetic.

Currently awaiting word on how the operation has gone and if any other issues were found or complications arisen.

Picture of handsome Jasper attached

Hoping for a good outcome

Sorry to hear that
Cats are surprisingly resilient. I had one hit by a car when it was a year old and it had a broken pelvis which didn’t stop it jumping a six foot gate to get home.
It went on to live a happy life for 16 years
Fingers crossed for you

Animals are so much part of the family. When anything happens to them it is as if it is a family member who has been hurt. Hope Jasper makes a full recovery. He really is a handsome chap.

Hi folks...thanks for the messages of support

I've not been on the forum at all over the last couple of weeks due to Jasper's accident.

Update as requested.....
CT scans and x rays revealed 7 fractures on the left of his face, and 4 on the right.
Bruising to his lungs
Ulcer on his one remaining eye
Nasal cavities filled with fluid

He was operated on on the Wednesday morning and had various wires inserted into his jaws to hold everything in place. He currently has a pair of twined wires sticking out of his chin.
He was in the hospital for a week and we get him home on 5th November. Because of the work on his jaws, he can't eat so he's had a feeding tube inserted into his neck and we feed him high calorie blended food every 4-5 hours.
For several days he couldn't breathe through his nose due to the blood in his nasal cavity so he was snorting and snoring all the time. That meant he was breathing through his mouth, dribbling, not sleeping well and generally feeling a bit crap.
Multiple pain killers, and eye drops for several days. We're currently down to just two different meds after what he had either ran out, or was stopped by the vet.
Despite all this, he still finds time to purr when content, pad his blanket or cushion and even give headrubs. Quite incredible given he was hit by a car, maybe 350times his weight less than two weeks earlier.
Nose is cleared now, breathing better, sleeping better, healing faster (hopefully)
He ate today at lunchtime for the first time....approx 35g of food which is great news.

Still a bit to go because the feeding tube is still in place but I think that might be out over the next few days if we can get him eating regularly. Then further xrays and checks about 6weeks post op to check his jaw and remove the wires.

Main thing is, he's going to make it although he still has quite a bit of healing ahead. And I've never appreciated insurance so much. Currently, the cost is estimated at £4800-5000. My excess will be around £500.

I've attached a photo from a few days ago showing him sleeping and the wires in his chin. And another of the CT Scan showing his head and the split jaws....there shouldn't be a gap between the teeth so you can see how much damage was done.

Thanks again for the support and concern. Once he's allowed back out, I'll get a few pics of him on the Z4!

Great news. Sounds like you have one very special cat and Jasper has one very special owner

Great news. Animal insurance is expensive these days but you can’t risk being without it. We have two Cavaliers and it costs more to insure them than it does to insure both cars and the house.
But they are worth it! As is Jasper. Fingers crossed his recovery continues at pace.

Thanks everyone
He got his feeding tube out today and is feeling much better without it. He's eaten a decent amount too. Probably as much as a relief for me as it is for him.

I realised after posting that I mentioned the CT scan of his skull but forgot to attach it....so I've attached it here. You can see the gaps between his front teeth showing how much his jaws were damaged.

Hospital satisfied with his progress so the next thing is getting the wires removed - appointment for mid to late December. Hopefully no complications before then.

Wow. Thats some amount of detail in that scan.
You hear a lot about cats jaws splitting after being in accidents.
What kind of cat is it? It looks a bit like one of our maine coons.

Yeah apparently it's a fairly common injury and can be caused by falls, accidents, assaults.

Jasper was rescued from the SSPCA and they described him as a long haired tabby. In some photos he looks like a maine coone and the vet thinks there probably is some maine coone DNA in there somewhere.

That's one handsome cat you have....he's lovely!
