Roof closed, then window issue - Sorted (ish)

A mate has had a few intermittent issues recently with his roof.
It goes down fine. However on closing the roof completes its cycle except for the windows going back up
At this stage he gets the dreaded 'Bong' and a red warning on the dash.
Bringing the windows up via the door switch operates the windows and the warning extinguishes

Now the odd bit
BMW have had it in the shop twice.
Battery (I think original - 2010) has been checked and is said to be fine
They can't find anything wrong. No fault codes evident :o
It cycled fine when they had it

I've told him to try resetting the windows, but I suspect this is later in the process anyway
Anyone had a similar experience or have any ideas what might be the cause?
Thanks

First step would be to change the battery. Even though it’s been tested ok you would be surprised how a weak battery can affect the car.
My 35is on a14plate when I bought it presented all ok but the boot wouldn’t open unless you opened the drivers door first even though the car was unlocked, fitted a new battery and it’s been fine ever since 🤷🏻‍♂️

Yeah that was my first thought a month ago. I think because it's checked out as OK on 3 occasions he's thought it must be something else
Tayna has a replacement at about £80 so probably worth a punt

My roof was also giving me grief, also original battery, also 10 years old, also replaced from Tayna 😁

Sorted out my roof issue (warning bong, stuttering when closing) straight away.

Cheers Guys
He picked the car up from the dealer today, all OK at the moment.
I've said it's worth a new battery for the potential electronic handbrake issue alone, and it may just fix this problem as well
He's going to get a new battery fitted in the next few days, so I'll update when done

New battery fitted - roof and windows now work ok
He's not having much luck though. Today the yellow engine performance light came on (Not EML)
Car runs Ok. Any ideas out there (not had chance to put my code reader on it yet)
I was thinking possibly split air hose or plugs/coil??

Has he driven it more than once..does the warning re-appear?

Does he have idrive?

What model..what age / mileage..

2.0l, 2010, 64K miles

I don’t think 20i were made till March 2011?

My bad :?
You're correct 2011
No i-drive

When it first came on he stopped and started engine - still on
He's just been out to try it again - came on straightaway

Assuming it’s been serviced ok then without the code reader and no idrive it’s a pass from me..

The N20s generally don’t generate many engine faults...unlikely to be coils and plugs as much better looked after compared to the 35i engines..

Cheers Pbondar, Yeah it's in great nick and I believe a good service history (it was in the dealers last week for roof issue, so no codes then)
He's bringing it round later in the week so will put my code reader on it and take a look
