Roof motor??

So, come to use the car today (34k 2008 Z4M), and the roof won't open - it unlatches and windows drop but then nothing, so I'm thinking I've got the dreaded motor failure.

I'm really surprised at this given age of the car - I check the drain holes fairly regularly, and from what I have seen, it hasn't held water.

I have scanned the module with INPA and it has no error codes, so wondering what else it might be. I think because the windows drop and it unlatches, that rules out the parcel shelf micro switch, but before I pay out £100's for a new motor, what else could I check?

same symptoms as mine when it was on its way out I'm afraid... people have removed and dried them out and refitted to the boot though so may be worth trying to salvage it

Same thing happened to me around a year ago.
I disconnected the battery and also pulled out the manual release cable in the boot and put it back in again.

roof motor started working again and has been fine ever since :)
Disconnecting the battery and resetting the manual release cable might just be all it needs.

Funny you should say that, I have just disconnected battery, and nipped inside and saw your post, so fingers crossed. I spent ages resetting the window pinch protection thinking that may have something to do with it - a few months ago I had a flat battery - that seems to be a common precursor to a roof malfunction - will report back in 15mins!

yes - I pulled it out yesterday to manually lower the roof, so its back in, and have just checked again.

Does this disengage the motor entirely, ie when it is pulled out, can you still hear the motor running (if its working in the first place), or does it cut the power?

Not sure tbh. I think mines got disturbed when it was in for a service so when I went to lower my roof the Windows went down, roof hinges disengaged but zero noise from roof motor.

I reseated the release cable and all was good

Unfortunately, your motor has died :(

But there is some brilliant info here in the forum how to get it to come back to life.

Read georgios post "roof motor dead and brought back to life" (it is just below your post on the topics page)

If you decide to tackle it yourself you will get some great help from the guys on here. I for one will help as much i can for you.

Cheers, tug.

I had this problem, but my lot or was still running with no movement. I along with the help of my brother in law took the roof off and located the motor, it was wet but hadn't yet rusted. My problem was the Bowden cable( manual release ) the mechanism that is in the motor was stuck in and not releasing back out to engage the hydraulics. Have since relocated the motor in the boot with hardly any hassle. My roof is now working spot on.
Bearing in mind I'm a 27 yr old female and I did it, so if advise anyone to have a go and not pay rip of dealer prices
