I am planning a road trip from the Midlands to the Isle of Mull in June , a distance for me of around 400 miles. I don't fancy doing the journey (mostly up the M6) in one hit (well my wife doesn't). Has anyone got any recommendations for an overnight stop in the Scottish lowlands, maybe getting towards Glasgow, with a good restaurant? Ideally not far off the M74. Looking for a nice hotel not B&B..........

We have stayed here a few times on our way North. Not Scotland but pretty close.

The cottage B&B is Barn Gill House on Trip Adviser. A few years since we were last there.

I would recommend Dumfries. Using Google maps if looks like it'll only add on about 13 miles to your total journey. It's a little past halfway based on mileage.

There are plenty of restaurants, pubs, hotels, history, museums, and things to do.

If you’re considering Glasgow Balloch is another 20 mins further up, plenty of nice hotels with both restaurants on site but also half a dozen nice restaurants within 5 mins walk

Are you looking for a scenic route to Mull once in Scotland?

Maybe try Gretna and renew your vows, good way to look romantic and score brownie points

Thanks for the tip. Going for your suggestion, looks good on tripadvisor for one night. Thanks.
I'd love a scenic route to Oban (Mull) but after 6 hours in the car to Balloch if I said to the wife we've got another 4-5 hours to Oban she'd have something to say ..............

Just throwing it out there, the drive up the M74 is a rather tedious one and if you fancied taking a detour towards Edinburgh you could head off at Abington services, picking up the A702 to Edinburgh, lovey smooth swinging road with great scenery right up to the ski slope off Edinburgh City Bypass, head towards M8 at Hermiston Gait ( Starbucks, Large Tesco and other retail outlets ) before picking M8 up to J3 where you could pull off and have an overnight stay at the McDonalds Houston House Hotel ( Mary Queen of Scots stayed here, true fact ). Hotel has a pool, large gardens and very reasonable with very good food on offer ( use it often ). Local golf club Uphall, also has excellent food along with local coach house hotel, Oatridge in the village. Next morning you can then enjoy a 2hr 30min or so drive to Oban up via Callander which is another epic driving road 👍
