Well, your family will like you more because of it

I never drink (don’t like the taste) so never been a challenge.

Any reason that triggered your turnaround?

To try and save my marriage (and my life) TBH.
Don't want to get into a therapy session on here, just suffice to say I needed to change the way I was (not) living.

If it's at that stage, you’re doing the right thing.

I'll toast you with a beer later.

You’ll get there bud, 35 yrs since alcohol has passed my lips. Total dick with it, just slightly less so without it but jail was not that appealing so decision made  but definitely the right thing for ME and everyone around me!!! Total abstinence is my solution. You’re biggest challenge will be being surrounded by the drunken @rseholes that you used to be one of that will now without doubt get on every last one of your nerves :x

I sincerely wish you all the best, it won’t either be an easy, nor smooth road you’re now on

Alcohol is a good thing until drinking gets out of hand. It can take over and ruin people's lives.

I should really cutback on my intake, but I do enjoy a drink.

I would save a fortune if I did stop drinking.

I have never drunk enough to get pissed, ever. My problem is the 'habit'. It was little but VERY often. It became just what I did in the evenings, then became EVERY evening for years. Then a cumulative effect started setting in; so I was never drunk but never totally sober.
The habit then became the most important thing in my life, at the expense of my wife and daughter and everything else.

I have a bit of an obsessive personality, so I either do something 100% for 100% of the time or not at all. Moderation is not for me, unfortunately.

I have now seen the light. It was almost an epiphany. Problem now is trying to convince the family that I have changed my way of life and thinking permanently. My brain is also now working at a million miles an hour, so I'm bored and restless.

I'm thinking of doing some kind of voluntary work in the new year to get me out and about again.

Here's a sobering thought for you Pondrew. A friend of mine's father retired from a life of hard work running his own business and instead of getting a hobby of some kind he started drinking. He would sit in his armchair and drink all day and night until the day he died. I'm glad you are not going to be like him, you seem to be such a nice chap and it would be nice to think you will be around for a very long time sharing your clever wit and humour with us all on here.

Any volunteers to test drive a Ferrari? :o

In all seriousness though, like any addiction kicking it has to be a good thing so hopefully its a turning point, think of the pennies saved and improvement to health :)

Thankfully never liked alcohol.

Gave up fags in 1990 after 10 years smoking, best thing I did.

Tim.

Best of luck to you  Easy decision for me :D

A lot of people will slag it off but some of the Aldi/ Lidl 0% beers (straight from the fridge) are actually quite good

Some people have addictive personalities. You appear to have cleared the hardest hurdle in recognising that you have such a personality, it was causing you harm but had the strength to do something about it. Many don't posses that strength. Stick with it and move forward and use your addictive behaviour a positive way.

PS Draught alcohol free Guinness is brilliant. I drink but always choose that if its available.

Yes good luck Pondy.

I'm starting to think I ought to give it a try. For me it just seems to happen through boredom. :(

He's right, Guinness zero is pretty good.
