Top Up Oil

Just gone to my boot to check the top up bottle. It's Castrol Edge Professional 0W-30. Is this the right sort of thing that should have been supplied with the car? Bearing in mind it came as an AUC car. I thought it should have been 60?

No, it should be 10W-60. The official BMW supplied oil used to be called Castrol Edge for M engines, but I think Castrol rebrand it now for dealers and it is called Castrol TWS Motorsport, but it is the same specification.

So they should send me a bottle as an AUC, you reckon?

no, the previous owner has brought the incorrect oil, its not the AUCs remit to change top up oil in the back of the car..... i just hope the car has seen the correct oil over its life, that said even though 10w60 is recommended the 0w30 would not hurt a daily driven z4m at all, but still id prefur one thats seen the correct weight in terms of lubricant.

We're talking specifically about the S54 engine in the E85/86 M model. This is an altogether different engine with very specific oil requirements i.e: 10W-60 .

You've got the wrong way round. It used to be called Castrol TWS Motorsport but is now Castrol Edge : http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectionbodycopy.do?categoryId=9024084&contentId=7073092

Interesting. The story I'd heard was that for the consumer it has always been Castrol edge for m engines, hence why that link "still" shows Castrol for M. However BMW, in a cynical move, now get the same oil supplied from Castrol under a new name, TWS, to try and deflect criticism of the extortionate mark up they charge on their services.

However I can't remember where I heard that and so am probably wrong. I always supply my own oil to BMW to save costs so no idea what the branding is on the oil you buy through them.

Well it's always been serviced at the same supplying BMW dealership, so I've no worries about that. Also, the top-up bottle was unused, so I don't think any of it's in there. Though even if it was, I highly doubt a small amount would make any difference to its running.

Mine is supposed to take 0W-30, that's Alpina for you! Sytners are beginning to recommend putting in 10W-60 if the oil consumption worsens

BMW recommends using 10W-60 (Castrol EDGE or TWS) for all ///M engines. When I bought my S62, the previous owner had some other goo in there. It had been topped up when I bought the car (with the goo) but it went dry in a few days. Pre-facelift S62s are very thirsty when it comes to oil, but it was made much worse by the non-BMW recommended oil. I'd play it safe and go with the recommended Castrol 10W-60, since I believe BMW recommends those for a reason (and that reason isn't trying to rip you off!)
