My second E86 had an Amber EML appear and when my Indy read the codes it was showing P0420 and P0430 so the post cat sensors on both banks were showing CAT efficiency below threshold. Codes cleared, a dose of Cataclean and a good run on Shell V-Power solved it for a few months and I made a point of running it on SuperPlus fuel.
But then the EML returned for the same codes and while my Indy was running diagnostics the battery died.
Anyway a new battery, codes cleared, another does of Cataclean and a diet of SuperPlus kept the EML off for the next 3 years I owned it.
I don't really know whether the new battery, Cataclean or high octane fuel was the cure but was just glad I didn't need new Cats as that was possibly the next option!
Thank you both for your responses. I donβt know the codes but just been told they relate to the CAT. Cat clean and a new battery sounds like a much cheaper solution, letβs see how we get on
My Z4 with the N52 engine had one of the cats blocked, happened over a year ago. Gave misfires on bank 1 but took quite some time before I found out the cats were the problem. The car had 240.000 km.
Because new cats are very expensive from BMW and second hand hard to find I started looking for other options. I bought two 200 cells sport cats and welded them into the original exhaust manifold. Because one was blocked I suspected the other one wasn't way better so replaced this one too.
The two new cats costed me 400 euros on total. (more expensive now: https://www.chargertech.nl/onze-merken/boost-products/partnr-ex-kat-200-120-racing-catalytic-converter-200-cells-120mm.html) So including gaskets and nuts is was done with less than 500 euros for two new cats, even better than original. I sold the content of the old cats for 160 euros on total. I created a stand to keep the dimension correct while cutting out the cats and replacing it. I did it myself but I guess a exhaust fabricator could do the same. I got a lambda light afterwards because of the better flow of the cat but was able to program this out with the help of a tuner I know.
