The August 2024 Photo Competition - Comments

Switched my submitted photo as realised I’d used it before - bad Andy. Wanted to submit a picture from today’s visit to Caffeine & Machine Bowl but it keeps giving me a black image ?? Can’t fathom out what’s different, unless it’s simply a too big file? All that said, there are already some incredible pics so I don’t expect to get any votes, which is fine. It’s all about the taking part.

The forum software compresses the photos but not sure that will be the issue - is it a different file format? The current one shows up fine.

Not sure Mike… it’s a bit random. I can load some pics and not others, from the same day. It’s only started doing it since switching to iPhone 15 so it could be my starting file size rather than the compressed finish. It maybe that I edited the pics (some not all) which creates a ‘wall’.. I’ll try test it out next time. Doesn’t matter, it’s just a bit odd.

Maybe a problem with apple's HEIC image format?

X-driver you’ve so stepped out of my level of tech understanding! 😂
I see another iPhone 15 pro user is having same random upload issues (a few ‘black’ shots within a series of same day images. Random

The usual image format is JPG, I'm sure you know this one. Apple introduced their Heic format as a high quality compressed images - a better JPG in other words. It is a higher quality picture than JPG, but takes less space than JPG. This may or may not be the problem here. Usually images from iPhones work normally anyway.

Then there is also this apple's moving picture, does your picture move (like a short video) when you view it on your iPhone? This may also not work when uploaded elsewhere.

I'm not stating any of the mentioned things to be the reason, this is just my knowledge about iPhone's specialty, I'm an android user however

Perfect sense, thank you. No, I’ve learned to turn off ‘live’ off (I’ve hundreds of pics in the phone from my iPhone 11 that are, infuriatingly, as didn’t know how to remove) on my 15. It’s odd that it’s random (or seems random). Makes uploading a new game 😉

So I’ve got my picture ready for the next month’s competition… altho I’ve no idea yet if it will or will not load up!! 😂

Maybe it's a totally new issue with those 15s.

Try making a screenshot of your picture, crop it and try to upload it then. Maybe it will work...

you read my mind

Hello,
I think to avoid any potential upload issues with large file sizes, you might want to try compressing your images before uploading. You can use any online tool such as jpeg compressor tool that can help reduce the file size.
