Oulton Park driftday Dec 19th - club discounts

We are off to Oulton Park again on the Saturday before xmas for another driftday.

For those that have not done this before, it’s the perfect way to learn how to drift your RWD or 4WD car and see how it handles and reacts in a slide. The low grip surface is very kind on tyres causing almost zero wear even after a full day of driving sideways! No problem if you are a complete novice, it’s a fun day out and a great way to practice your oversteer skills.

Same format as usual, full access to both drift stages and free instruction available all day to make sure you get the feel for it, you can even get one of our annoyingly talented instructors to drive you round to see what your car can do!

The discounted club rate is £120 for the day (£140 list price), passengers are a tenner and extra drivers £35.

I'm interested as well.

Just out of interest, what kind of numbers are you expecting and what's the average "lap count" you get for the day?
I've done a few open-pit trackdays, which are always good value, but I did a driftday at castle combe and got about 5 laps in :thumbsdown:
 
We book about 26 cars in for the driftdays, there are two different stages to play on and we release a car roughly every 20-30 seconds. Once you've completed your lap you can join the queue to go straight back out again. With there always being a few cars resting at any one time queues can be as many as 10-12 cars or as few as only one or two but even with 10 cars that can be as little as three minutes queueing. I worked it out once that even with regular breaks you should get over 100 runs during the day so plenty of track time!

TBH these events get the best feedback of any of the stuff that we do; they are a really relaxed, fun day out 8) .

I've been waiting for this to pop up again :D

Are you planning another one after xmas, as this date might be a little awkward for me :(
 
Dammit why can't a venue up north of the border offer something like this?! It's just what I'm looking for but Oulton is too far for me...
 
So is this essentially a track day, but you are encouraged to drift it and maybe spin out now and again as part of the experience?

When two stages are mentioned, I guess one is more for drifting gods and it's more a proper fast circuit/track day, and the other is a slower slippier stage to just learn on!?


What about need for insurance? Would like to try this out but don't want to suffer a loss out there that isn't covered :)

Not quite.

Oulton Park has a couple of low grip circuits that are used for driver training and their rally experience days.

If you look at the GoogleMaps link below you will see the normal outline of the circuit (which is black), with two smaller (white) circuits in the top of the circuit - these are the low grip circuits.

Tommo, we will be aiming to do some more in the new year.

a11y, the southerners all say the same - it's a unique facility, nothing else quite like it that I'm aware of but well worth the trip!

Mr Whippy, obviously your normal road insurance won't cover you but will presumably you'd be able to get cover through one of the specialist brokers like CCI (talk to Mark on 0115 9416184). Most people don't bother but entirely up to you.

Both stages are suitable for novices but one is trickier than the other so there's a good progression available, both stages are low friction so you won't muller your tyres on either one and even the first timers are drifting in no time.
 
Just to save me the time if it's gonna be silly money, do you reckon I could get the cost of entry + insurance for ~ £200 all in?

Tempted by this as it's one area I'd like to explore with the car (TCS off on a fairly low grip surface)

I'm guessing that the insurance will be under £100 but you'd have to phone Mark to get a quote, tell him you are one of the Trackaction-Online guys and see what he comes up with.
 
Well, I'm not going to make this one either.

I've just been told that my current piece of work will be finishing on Friday 18th December and that I won't be needed in the New Year until another piece requiring my talents pops up.

That, along with having lots of bills pop up this week (£700 for insurance, £900 for warranty, £400 for road tax, £500 for brakes), means I need to save every penny I can just to keep the car, never mind having fun in it :headbang:
 
£500 for brakes sounds like a lot to me and I'm glad I can keep my two cars SORNed and trailer them to trackdays - the saving in tax alone covers my track tyre, brakes and fuel bills for the year!

It's my one and only car so does 20,000 miles a year and a couple of trackdays/'ring trips.

Pads were only £100, but the discs were £130 each for the fronts and £90 each for the rears - GSF/ECP couldn't do genuine ones at all and OEM spec were only £10 cheaper.

That's for the full, comprehensive, BMW assist, no excess option though. I can get it down to £700 if I up the excess or decrease the level of cover. However I've already one small but expensive, and one big and very expensive warranty claim this year which would have paid for the warranty cost 20-fold!

I haven't been told the cause yet—and it's still not completely resolved to my satisfaction—but the result was a new engine.
 
TVR will rebuild S6's for less, after full on catostrophic failures.

BMW replacing a whole engine does seem like over-kill, a little like replacing a whole screen because of rain sensor gel failure. £600 warranty claim vs £50 maybe!

BMW warranty claim costs don't, imho, mean that the warranty is then good value per se.


Of course, a nice new engine is good value for the money paid :D ... but the fix in real terms might have been £500 and all been well, you would ultimately have £400 extra in your pocket...
I suppose it depends what value you put on potentially needless excessive repairs vs the risk of them actually not being needless and being really required :)
