Right, so seems a few people seems to have done it this year, (and I wanted to but never managed it), how about a bit of a road trip next spring/summer? To the Ring, or the Alps (Stelvio Pass etc)? Just a thought, anyone be up for that? Been talking to my mates about it and would love to do it next year, it's one of those 'must do' things.

Suggestions...

I would be WELL up for this!! It would have to be during my easter/summer hols but yes deffo!
I fancy a drive through italy/swiss mountains? Like the trip they did on top gear..perhaps re-create that?
But yes sign me up dude!!

Im excited for this already hahah...whats the crack insurance wise? Most companies cover u abroad do they? Guess its in the small print somewhere..
How much fuel wise would it cost to cover a 5 day trip?? Im using 5 days as a rough figure..and i kno its down to how many hours we drive...jst tryin to figure out if its financially viable for me...plus partying money plus accom...intend to eat beans on toast for duration to maximise beverage fundage :P

'woots' - i thought you were saving for some new wheels? :? - road trip would be so much fun though :)

Oops, I forgot about the insurance. Bet it wont be as expensive as living in Liverpool. May be they'll even give some money back for taking it out of high risk area

I suppose it all depends on how many people, group discount for accom/food/petrol (asume we'll all prob re-fill in same place) etc. I always wanted to drive across europe but never had time/money/guts to do it!

Oh yeah I'll swap the birth years if I get to be a teenager again :P

I miss the ability to drink all night, stay awake till 8am on Sunday, make a full fry up goto sleep then wake up at 3pm to watch the Sunday footy. If I did that now, I'll be recovering for about a year.

id love a forum trip to the ring.

.. but could you guys keep up ? 8) :driving:

:poke: :?

I'd give it a try!

Places I would like to visit are the Ring, the Alps, Modena and an Autobahn!

We worked it out this year, and to get down to the Alps and back up to the Ring you need at least 4 days, thats with plenty of driving each day.

Insurance is apparently covered by a 'Green Card' that you apply for, which costs 25 quid (told this when I rang my ins company). But you obv need specialist ins on the Ring...if you don't wanna risk it. Which it isn't advised to.

Dover to Dunkerque is the cheapest car ferry I believe, I think it's about 100 quid return.

B&B's can be had cheaply around the Ring, but Italy is more expensive (especially Drink :| )

I am planning on going over to Europe in mine next year anyway. I was thinking June time. If it happens to coincide with when you all go it'd be great to tag along. I have always fancied driving around the Monaco GP circuit, particularly the tunnel! And the ring / Stelvio etc are on the list for me too.

I would say you need a bit longer than that if you are including a Ring trip. 4 days would be absolute bare minimum to get to the Alps and back (and enjoy any of it). You can get to the Alps in a day from here (London for me) as I have done it, but it is knackering. Better to allow two days to get there, or leave one evening after work and break the back of it down to somewhere like Reims and early start the next day.

For most a Green Card is included in the policy – you just need to call up and tell the insurance company where you are going and when as they normally only cover Europe and usually it is for a limited number of days (to stop people living out there with a car insured here etc). For the Ring I think you will struggle to get insurance. My track day cover does not cover it, it is seen by insurers as very high risk because it is very high risk. More accidents there than any other track. There is some debate as to whether a standard policy covers it due to the ring being a toll road but to be honest I would not fancy my luck in making a claim. I have span off at the Ring, it is so long it is impossible to learn the track unless you do it many, many times and it is dangerous and demanding. Great experience and even driving it cautiously gets the adrenaline flowing.

I bought a return from Dover to Calais for £58. Eurotunnel is by far a better way to go though and worth a bit extra as it saves a lot of time and hassle... especially if you are doing it on so few days.

I don't think going to the Ring can be done all that cheaply? Pretty sure I paid over £200 for 2 nights in Sabine's family hotel? Me and the GF that is. The Ring itself is not cheap either.

Ok, they were only suggestions, like I said, at 'least' 4 days. As for insurance, you can get specific cover for the Ring from a trackday insurer, as I have had quotes before. Also, I never said going to the Ring was cheap, I said B&B's can be found cheap in the area, which they can. It's pretty obvious that driving all the way there and then paying 14£ a lap is gunna add up.
