Spokey's Euro Roadtrip 2010

I can't give dates yet -- it's dependent on what the public calendar for the 'ring is for 2010 and that hasn't been released yet. But I thought I'd see what sort of interest there was for an extended Euro roadtrip in 2010. The itinerary would look something like this:

Day 1:
Meet up at various ferry / chunnel points and drive to the 'ring.
Lunch at the Grune Holle
TF Laps
Check into hotel (a range are available to suit any pocket)
Dinner at the Pistenklause

Day 2:

Laps
Lunch
More laps
Dinner at the Kleine Kneipe

Day 3:
Depart 09:00
Drive to Munich (or go home!)
Four points Sheraton in Munich - check in and have lunch
Explore Munich
This day is likely to be more expensive, hotel-wise. I also don't know what the BMW museum costs. For cost and time reasons, we could regard this as an optional day as well.

Day 4:
Check Out
BMW Museum
Lunch
Depart 14:00
Drive through Bavaria and into Austrian Tyrol
Overnight in Austrian alps

Day 5:
Depart 09:00
Drive the Timmelsjoch pass to Stelvio and across the top of Italy to Val d'Isere in France (lunch next to a lake?)
The alternative might be Stelvio to Davos and a couple of days in Switzerland, doing mountain passes.

Day 6 (or 8 ):
Depart 09:00
Drive across the French Alps via the Col du Torini for lunch, past Monaco and Nice to Grasse (at the foot of the Route Napoleon) - afternoon off + 1 day stopover to recharge

Day 7 (or 9):
Depart 09:00
Drive the Route Napoleon to Grenoble, then down to Avignon

Day 8 (or 10):
Depart 11:00
Drive to Millau and across the gorge
Drive across the Midi Pyrenees to Vers, check into hotel
Day off to recharge including Saint-Circ-Lapopie for a guided tour

Day 10 (or 12):
Depart 09:00
Cross country drive to Le Mans, including a "lap" of the circuit.
Check into hotel in Le Mans

Day 11 (or 13):
Depart 09:00
Drive to Calais, lunch en route
Chunnel to Blighty at around 15:00, get to UK at 15:00 BST

As you can see, it's really a 2-week deal and even then we'll only be touching on stuff -- no Amsterdam (unless you want to do it before or after). I can make it shorter, but I don't want to make it longer. If you're interested, indicate how long you would be prepared to give to the trip and I can create an itinerary around the average commitment, as it were. Also, please tell me which month you would prefer to do it and any time you absolutely cannot do it. Let me know when you register your interest whether you're keen on Switzerland (or not!)

I'm also keen to hear comments on sightseeing. Personally, I'm not all that keen on big-city stuff, you can easyJet for that. However, the BMW museum might be of interest to loads of people, hence its inclusion. Left to my druthers, I wouldn't make it part of a cruise. My cruises are more about driving, scenery and getting a feel for an area than a detailed investigation. But let me know your thoughts.

acerboo - 9 days max - not in June
flimper - 5 days max
spud - school holidays only
dan_i - 5 days max

im def interested prefer this to the grand prix trip but would prefer 8-9 days max and not in june. if anyone is interested i live near maidstone just off junc 7 of the m20 and can sleep up to 80 people in accommodation reasonable price self catering, may be of interest to those travelling a distance, dover is about 45 mins from me. not really bothered about the second part of the trip after switzerland and would like to see birtchesgarten, hitlers house, (apologies if spelled wrong, too lazy to look it up!) bmw museum sounds great and all the alps and passes.

I'm interested too, but sounds a bit too much of a good thing for me. I'd rather have a 4-5 day trip, take in a few autobahns, the BMW Museum and maybe 1 day of track stuff and the rest sightseeing, driving etc.

There really won't be a lot of sightseeing included in 4-5 days, especially if 1 is gone to the 'ring and 1 to the museum. You're going to lose 1 day just getting there and back, at least. So it would be 5 very frantic and exhausting days. However, maybe what you could do is go for 4 days and then head back from wherever we are? :?

I think two weeks is a bit much, who'd want to put up with me for a fortnight?

I'm working on some options. I think 11 or 13 days is probably too long, but I also think 5 days is too short. Reckon the sweet spot is about 8 days, doing Germany and Switzerland, then going home. However, I suspect that Switzerland will be expensive, so I can also work on a "Germany-only" or "Germany and France" option if people want that?

Sorry, didn't explain that very well, by sightseeing I mean driving, with the odd stop here and there to look at anything pretty :)

Oh right ... that's what I call "driving".

The trip sounds great but I will unfortunately be out of the UK until next October at the earliest. If you are going to do the Ring then I wouldn't suggest that you drive from the UK and then after a long drive attempt the Ring. Give both your car and yourself a rest before your first lap. The link below gives a reasonable guide to driving on the Ring. BEWARE it's addictive!

There are 2 types of driving.
1) Eyes focused on the front only. Sport button engaged. Smell of burnt rubber. Wife in passenger seat threatening divorce.
To be used on the 'ring and the autobahns

2) Driving like Miss Daisy. Enjoying the pretty flowers and the birds singing. Sport button not used. Wife in passenger seat suitably impressed.
To be used for remainder of trip

:D

8 days sounds good, no point going to switzerland if they dont really want us to visit their country so germany and france sounds ok but are'nt all the good passes/tunnels in italy?

I spent a week in France this year and the roads were incroyable! I could quite easily do 8 days in France and it would be just as much fun.

I'd be interested, but more around the 7/8 days, as I'm already short of holiday for next year.
I absolutely cannot do anytime up to the start of may, but after that any times golden :)

Would love to come, but with work it's impossible to plan anything (I do short term contracts) we had to cancel this years Holiday (after it was paid for) as I flew to Brazil for 3 months 1 week before we were due to drive to Provence, however if I join in at the last minute if I'm about it would be great to do.

My preferrence would be 7-8 days max if I'm able to do it. will keep looking see what the final decission is

I would absolutely love to hit up Italy. I may or may not partake in Ring festivities.....depending on which day we go I might do a lap around the ring, then take a detour to go say hi to some buddies that I still have over in Spangdahlem (about 30 or so min from the Ring). I might still remember a few local roads in that general area if others want to join me. I might be taking another trip over which will be good to refresh my memory.

I know 1st weekend in June (and I'm sure about a week before and after) MTV's Rock-Am-Ring will be at Nurburgring (I plan on attending).

I have to dig up a bit more info on when I'll be restricted to closer travels so I'll update that in a few days. ATM I don't think 13days would be a problem, I should have enough leave to do that.
