Ooooh tempting! (or am I mad for even looking?)

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2173363.htm - £8,750, 56k miles, Cat C...

(that's actually outrun from z4-forum selling that car)

Anyone else absolutely LOVE these cars?! I almost bought one instead of my Z4 - sometimes I wish I had as I'm doing less miles in my Z4 than I thought I would, and hence could've handled the higher running costs on a Z M Coupe. But then at that time I thought my work circumstances might change and I'd end up needing a car for further commuting. Ah well, perhaps in a few years.

Cat C - always been put off by that, but in a circumstance like this where there's a record of the damage including photographic evidence and non-structural... would you?

I would (if only outrun would consider a swap for a non-M Z4 roadster instead of a Z4MC :D)

Worth less than a non-crash/repaired car
Possible issues if not repaired properly
Stigma attached to them (some folk won't touch a Cat C or Cat D car)
Some insurers ask more to cover them

Basically I wouldn't normally look at a Car C as it usually involves fairly serious damage (Cat D is more minor damage), but when in this case Cat C was because of this level of damage, you've got to think about it:

I did some searching on other forums and IIRC it was:
- new bonnet (repaired one sourced from another Z3)
- new wing
- new front bumper
- new wing mirror
- new wishbone
- new front dampers

i would say biggest pit fall is selling it in the future

a11y, yes completely mad, the Z3 was quite pretty and then they stuck, it seems with no design flair whatsoever, a hatchback to it.....just no

Yep, I AM mad - I absolutely love the shape of these :D. Completely ugly but still has some strange attraction for me. I'd take one in an instant...

If you like that sort of look and are not bothered about possible hassles of resale then it's a bit of a bargain
But if your happy to drive around in what IMO looks like some Chav got hold of a mini and stuck an //M front end on it.
And then I remember you are from Falkirk and therefore have no taste at all. :P

I've been trying to think of a witty reply, but unfortunately there's just too much truth in what you say about Falkirk!

Although - as bad as Falkirk is - I don't think whale grilles, chariot wheels and love-heart exhaust tips have taken off over here yet

See,,,No taste

I have to say IMO it's ugly as hell. I thought to myself when I first saw it "someone has gone overboard modifying a 1 series".

I wouldn't touch it myself Cat Cs are usually pretty bad, but if all parts were replaced with OEM then it should be ok. Resale will be a bitch both because its hideous and no-one wants it (1 person wants it) and because its damage/repaired.

Definitely wouldn't trade in my Z4 :driving:

I think it looks... unusual, and definitely retro. It would definitley be unique which can be a good or bad thing!

It kinda reminds me of a sporty hearse. :? :P

Awesome cars but very 'basic' e.g. raw compared to the zed. No traction control etc makes life exciting in the wet. Love the looks, esp the retro dash with dials everywhere though! I'd consider one at this price as an upmarket track slag or weekend toy but not sure cat c is the way to go. There are clean examples for not much more... With the s54 version they are very strong on residuals too!

i still think they are a cool looking motor, although i prefer them on the blue? estoril blue?

Yep, the estoril blue is the most common on them IIRC. But equally a couple of years ago I looked at one in red (I think Imola?) and it suited the car very well.

I've got no intentions of my Z4 going anywhere for a couple of years, but it doesn't do any harm to look! TBH I can already see me looking at something like this for my next car - something a bit different, something a bit "future classic", something that people-not-in-the-know will think I'm mad for buying. I've got the sensible (but expensive) option of my FiL's Cayman S in a couple of years, but my MAD side wants something like a Z M Coupe, a Z4MC, a Clio V6, an older 993/964, or something with an oversized V8...

I love these cars and even as a Cat C this looks a good deal. Might even have a look myself.

Category C:
Substantial damage, but repairable by an repairer or enthusiast.
The vehicle can be safely and economically repaired either by the insurer / motor trade or by an enthusiast using cheaper parts and reduced labour costs.

Still can not see how that can be Cat C based on that damage though? Whenever this was sustained, the car must have been worth say 10k.

How much damage cost would it make it a Cat C on that value?

its not all about damage cost but overall cost; the cost of all that list of parts new, plus paint and labour could have been £4-6k, in addition if the new parts had a two or three month lead time and the insurance company had to pay for a like for like hire car (say an SLK or Z4 3 litre) for 10-12 weeks at £150 a day you can see the total cost of the claim far exceeding the value of the Z3M.
