Dealer replacing my car....

This seems crazy to me but I bought a Silver Grey March 2007 3.0si sport coupe with imola red leather about a month ago with 16.5k miles. It was advertised as having isofix and airbag deactivation but turns out it doesn't.
I complained and the dealer says its a "mis-build" by BMW. They have looked into retrofitting but say it can't be done because I have heated electric seats.
The dealers solution? They are going to buy me a replacement car with as near as possible same spec/age/mileage!!! I'm not convinced it'll be easy to find one.
Whats the consensus here? This seems crazy to me but if I get an equivalent car with the isofix then great.

there's going the extra mile to make sure the customers happy and then there's.....well, that!

Depends how badly you need isofix I guess, but I'd probably prefer a few free services and MOTs instead :D

I can live without the isofix but need the airbag deactivation so I can pick up and drop off my daughter from nursery when required.
I need to be able to do this on occasion so need to have airbag deactivation. If not the car goes!

Will see what the dealer comes up with in terms of car and if not suitable will plump for some freebies.

CoupeChief - airbag deativation can be done, check out this link

I would imagine ISOFIX would be the same, if the dealer is prepared to replace the seat

Seems like one hell of an offer from the dealer...

But, if your car is the spec you want (except for the airbag deactivation) then I'd be showing them that link posted by jamiez and asking for the retrofit. From what you've mentioned about your car - mileage, spec and age - it's sounds a good 'un.

I've already shown them the link - BMW say they won't guarantee the work as it's safety critical and hence have gone down the replacement car route.

I'm happy to go down this route for the moment as they'll have to match my spec as a minimum so might end up with an extra toy or two in any replacement car compared to mine. Also, isofix only became standard 6 months after my car so I'll be getting a newer model.

Watch this space!

i didn't think airbag deactivation was an option - just something in the glove box?

How old is your daughter? You only need to deactivate the airbag for a rear facing *baby* seat as it sits so close to the dash and an inflation would impact it. A front facing child seat or booster you're fine with the airbag on - but recommended you move the seat as far back as possible.

It was an option when my car was built - became standard soon after. I know it only applies to rear facing seats but that's not the point. Said it had it and it doesn't.

Thats a tough one especially if you have a nice example already but your family must come first so if you are worried about your daughters safety then let them find you a good replacement which i think is a decent offer from BMW.

I am retro fitting the airbag switch at the moment, and only costs around £200 all in. Well most of thats labour so the dealer could easily do it!. But a replacement seat they may be twitching at, as seeing the prices of them :D

Im surprised they are getting you a new car though! Is it in your name?

Normally they dont like adding extra owners. Just seems like they could sort it relatively pain free (ish), so why go though all the trouble of trying to find you a new car. Even if they had another M with sport seats and isofix they could swap them over with.

Personally with my little one, i dont use the isofix (missus car has it), as there are only a few seats that use that system, well that we have seen. We have a belt type version, but the isofix system does look better imo.

I agree - seems like a lot of hassle for them but I'm willing to see what they come up with in terms of replacement. Figure I've nothing to lose.
We've got both an isofix seat and a hand me down normal belt seat. Isofix is miles better and rock solid.

i would have thought it would have been cheaper for them to retro fit it?

Out of interest what are different with isofix seats? I have them in mine but the buckle looks the same as the drivers to me?

And the airbag diactivation is on the side of the dash.. which is visible when you open the passenger door... disarming the airbag lights up the light near the gear stick... its virtually the same size and position as the sport button... but on the other side!

It would be cheaper but they won't guarantee the work for some reason so I'm not willing to accept it.

There is no difference in the seat belt. There are two mounting points hidden in the join between the seat and the backrest. The childs seat has the corresponding brackets to grab hold of the mounting points - gives a solid join between the child seat and car seat. Much more solid than seat belt style fitting. Especially in the zed as the shape of the seats mean the seat belt style child seat doesn't fit very well (the one we have doesn't anyway).

My car doesn't have it. Only became standard Sept 2007. Mine is a March 2007.

Can't say I'm surprised if it was mentioned in the pre-sales as a requirement....if it was then they are in clear breach of contract, its a complete no-brainer. And being such a safety issue, again their concern is understandable....also shows how much margin they made :poke:

Was thinking that myself. Hopefully it was the guy who had it before me who bore the brunt - car was leased so easy for dealer to make a packet on it.
