Bike Racks or Bike in the boot...?

Hi all,

Just thought I'd post this as a useful link to prove to anyone who was thinking about getting a Z and wasn't sure about space or wanting to tranport a bike and was unsure wether they would be able to do so. I have managed to fit my bike (58cm frame) into my boot (07 Z4 Coupe) without having to even lift the lugagge cover and also have fitted a bike rack (Saris Bones 2) with no trouble at all for taking the bike and kit...

First the boot carrigae of the bike, all that I had to do was remove the wheels, lower the seatpost and lift the handlebars off the stem. All achieved with one allen key and took no more than ten mins.

1, 2, 3) After dismantling the bike, cover greasy parts in sheet, plastic, towel, whatever you want to protect the car. I would normally use a towel but have used a plastic sheet so you can see the way in which the bike fits into the car. You can obviously put in which ever way suits you, this way enable you to keep the luggage screen pulled over the bike when in transit. the handle bars have just been lifted off the stem not completely removed for quick re-installation at the other end.

Once this has been doen simply place your wheels on top of the bike, again wrapped or however you wish to transport them and close the boot.

For those thinking about a bike rack for the z4, I bought a SARIS BONES 2 (the 2 menas it can carry two bikes) and does come in one and three bike options. Cost for the SARIS BONES 2 was £120 online. obvioulsy cheaper for the 1 and more expensive for the 3. Picture quality not the best here but shows the same bike mounted on the rear of the z4 coupe. Have fitted so that when attached the boot can still be opened (not advisbale with bike attached). As you can see there is still a small amout of space undneath the bike for kit, such as a helmet, shoes, pumps etc

Hope this helps someone!

Oh also forgot to mention that other than removing the wheels and handlebars, I dropped the seat to the lowest point.

Good post and pics. Tried fitting my Orange in the back when I first got the coupe but the forks are just too long so ended up buying the Saris Bones 2. +1 as a good solution

Also +1 on buying a Golf too as that happened 2 weeks ago so problem is doubly sorted

Any idea if the SARIS BONES 2 would fit those of us with a proper Z4 that has a folding roof?

Doubt it as it requires angled top surface. Either go for a more universal rack (Saris Sentinal etc) or forget the bike, put your folding roof down and break out the pink rim sunnies :poke: 8) :driving:

Cheers, mate, I'll check out the Sentinel. :)

I just find it hard to fit my bike in the boot, as all the space is taken up by my hair-dryer and straighteners, etc etc etc. :fuelfire:

No worries. Used to have a Sentinel on my old flappy roofed Zed. Link below for pics and short write up.

Cheers, mate. How much did you pay for your Sentinel when new? If you don't mind me asking?

Was def under £50 at the time but they look to have gone up a little since then. Now £58 at Wiggle.com or Chain Reaction Cycles. Both with free delivery.

No idea about a rack, but putting a bike in a roadster boot is possible: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=20525&p=298607&hilit=bike+in+boot#p298607

Personally taking the forks out to fit in the boot was a deconstruction step too far :!:

Cheers, buddy! I'll post pics once I've bought it!

I wouldn't even contemplate trying to put either my road bike or mtb in the boot of my roadster. I hate those rear racks so it would be in my series 1 hatchback if they ever needed transportating.

Is it just me or am I the only one that only has one car!!! (might be the fact I also own an awesome motorbike!) But its just the one car for me! :(

 One tip I will give on the Saris is that you need to angle it up as much as you can. The link I sent showing it on my roadster could probably have done with a few more degrees pitch. Also recommend taking the front wheel off and always used to further tie to the rack with a couple of bungee cords. Job's a good 'un!

Nah, you won't be the only one: I always had one car in the past and always ensured it was practical enough to regularly carry bikes. I wouldn't have bought my Z4 if I didn't have the campervan to do the bike-carrying duties.

In all my years of cycling I've heard of too many horror stories of bikes coming to grief or being stolen from either a roof rack or a rear bike carrier so I wouldn't bother nowadays. Most of my cycling is now done from home.

Im taking the plunge with this tonight. Going to order a Saris Sentinel 2, its listed as compatible in the full pdf spec book that they provide on the website (along with the guardian). Looks like it will do a decent job, however im going to have my boot lid clear vinyl wrapped to avoid any paint damage from the pads i think. Anyone else done this or similar before?

When I fitted roofbars to previous cars I applied sections of "Ventureshield" to the points where the rubber feet on the rack contacted the paintwork. Simple to apply yourself, easy to remove, and totally invisible (although you'll just be able to make out the edges). It's the exact stuff that can be fitted (professionally) to the front of cars against stonechips. Not quite sure I'd fancy applying it completely to a large surface though!

Beware that there's loads of this sort of stuff on ebay - I've found the actual Ventureshield-branded stuff far superior.
