Hi, am new to this forum, recently bought mint 06 2.0 sport z4, only covered 11000 miles. Was wondering what, or how was best way to protect/ clean soft top as never had one of these b4? Any suggestion greatly appreciated.

Welcome
BMW Cleaner and BMW conditioner
Outer roof layer is not waterproof ,it is meant to allow water through ( permeable )to the waterproof middle layer

I like the Autoglym stuff - you can get the cleaner and protector along with a scrubbing sponge in a pack for <£20.

Cleans up the roof nicely to give a deep black, and the protector makes water droplets bead off the roof!

Welcome, that's good mileage for that age.

I agree with Psy, Autoglym. Used it all the time on my Z3 when I had it.

Pics of your car please!

bought some meguires recently but due to the continual rain haven't had a chance to use it yet

Yes, but would it matter if the outer skin was repellant surley it could do no harm?
I am sure if BMW wanted that way they would have made it impermeable .They didn't it is permeable
and the BMW conditioner maintains the appearance and condition of the fabric roof but does NOT waterproof it
Autoglym is designed for hoods like a MX5 where it is meant to be waterproof
Your roof do what ever you like but OP asked the best solution and the correct solution is the BMW product
or the company that actually makes the hood material whose name escapes me at the moment

RaggTopp products have been thoroughly tested and endorsed by The Haartz Corporation - the worlds leading manufacturer of soft top materials for virtually every US and European convertible.
The names, I was looking for.

Thanks guys. Just wanna make sure i get it right. So many questions but have not got many answers, yet!. Will add photos as soon as. lookin forward to summer... if we get one!! never been on a forum like this, lookin forward to some more chat.

I use AutoGlym. The cleaner works really well, and whilst the water will bead in light rain, it will soak into the hood under heavy rain.

It does a great job, and doesnt cost the earth

I use Renovo products, no complaints, Their protectant is also a waterproofer, which causes some people on here to have kittens, Been using it on a regular basis for 2 years and so far no one has died, my wife hasn't divorced me, the sky hasn't fallen down and no kittens were thrown into rivers, and oh yeah the roof looks great.

Renovo is getting harder to find in retailers but is available on line.

Oh and welcome to the funhouse.

Not seen anyone reporting a problem by waterproofing their roof. But I have seen people who have used BMW stuff report green mould returning.

Also a soaked roof is heavier, and will take longer to dry.
BMW also design springs and wheels which break, and other aftermarket suppliers don't.

I used autoglym for years on Z3's and Z4's.

Maybe I should choose a raincoat that lets water through, cos my skin is also waterproof.
