OBD diagnostics

Tecchy question....

I am looking at getting an OBD2 fault reader for my dad who has a problem with his merc A class. I really want to get one which is compatible with the BMW z4 too ... so that I can use it.

Trying to decide between...the U380 (non canbus) or the U480 (supports canbus) shown on this page.

Does anyone know whether the z4 (upto 2008) uses canbus or not ?

... many thanks

If you are looking for just ODB-II, then most readers will do just fine.

ODB-II is just for engine/emissions equipment. Some readers will do just that. Better machines will read and clear the codes.

You have to remember that there are many more manufacture specific codes over and above ODB-II and it takes special readers/software to read those codes.

Check out this thread about SRS Air bag codes and such...http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3914&p=64749
It is mainly about the SRS module but you will get some more useful information..

Andy had a good thread listing *most* codes: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9444&p=141252

Thanks for the informative and useful reply Shipkiller. ( ... looking at your avatar, I think I now understand how you chose your username. )

I suppose that I ought to say that my z4 is actually problem free at the moment. I just want to get a diagnostic tool with some future proofing. I have since heard that the one to go for is called an ELM327 and that this when coupled with a laptop will give lots of dynamically updated information from the ECU. More out of curiosity at the moment....

the elm327 is the one i bought, got it from amazon for about £25.

threw up quite a few codes in mine i wasn't expecting...
