The Next Z Roadster(s)

I had a discussion today with my BMW salesman. I have known him for almost 20 years and he has never given me any really bad information. That said he admits that BMW USA often give them the mushroom treatment. This is what he told me he is being told by BMW USA about the future of the Z4. He is also aware of all the rumors going around the web and in the various forums.

Current models will continue until mid 2009 with 2009 models basically unchanged from 2008 models. Roadster production will then move to Germany with 2 models for 2010. An upscale Z4 meaning a little bigger and more expensive and with a V8 as an option. A smaller roadster based upon components from the Series I (I guess that would be the Z2 we have heard about.)

I asked about the issue with the S54 engine not meeting 2009 emission standards and he told me he was not aware of that issue. Anyway it will be interesting to see just how accurate this is in a year or so.

Interesting? Only thing strange is moving the production of the Z4 to Germany from the US. But that does open the door for European delivery and better part suppliers...

The move of Z-car production to Regenberg is official - BMW's announced it to the public. The Spartanburg facility will build the X5, X3, and X6. BMW claims the Z4 will keep going until 2009, but there are rumors they'll cut the run short for the transition. I personally suspect they'll stop production around May 2008 and let existing production carry through until the replacement arrives. There's no reason to keep production going until the last minute when the cars sit on the lot for a year or more already.

I really hope they go for a bare-bones, stripped down roadster in the Z2. Something with no frills, light and possibly with the 2.0i engine ... that would be soooooo sweet!

I am with epbrown. X6 production has started and delivery is slated for early second quarter. Z4 sales remain slow, production moving past May of this year would really be surprising. We enthusiats are really the only ones curious, I do not think there is buzz concerning the Z4's demise. The facts are out there, we just have not heard yet. BMW's just in time parts delivery system is state of the art and communication with their parts suppliers I suspect is also pretty informative regarding the future. Remember all these suppliers will be phased out of Z4 parts production (although they will be making SUV parts). I truley believe BMW will be gracious enough to give these guys a good deal of advance notice. I look forward to Homecoming 08 as this might be the last for us at the factory.

I think the 2008 Z4s will be the last current styled Zs produced and in reduced numbers. I received correspondence from the dealer I bought my Z from offering $15,000 off 2007 Zs in stock. Had they offered this when I bought my CPO 2006 Z4 6 weeks ago and if they had a manual Z4 in stock at that time, I would have opted for the 2007. Oh well, I guess timing is everything. Back to the 2008s. As dealers still have plenty of 2007s in stock, I think BMW will limit the supply on 2008s as there are no differences since 2006. I think the only difference between the 2006 and 2007 models is the aux input and no difference between the 2007 and 2008 model.

I hope they make a large supply of front bumpers before shutting down operations at their suppliers. :tumbleweed:
Trying to say that SoCal Sizzle is using up the current supply? :P

I dunno I clipped mine on a curb the other day and put a decent crack in it. I'd say a 3 inch piece of bumper is hanging a little bit. I'm thinking of taking a dremel to it just so it's not as noticeable.

I have been afraid that the next Z4 will end up being priced out of my range. I hope that the Z2 does not end up being to much of an "entry level" compromise.

So... do the X5's get their own version of HC?
When was the last time you heard of or saw pictures of an X5 (only) group meet/drive?

There ya go. :D
It's probably because they're all hardtops, and HC organizers couldn't call it an X5 Roadster Homecoming... so they didn't bother organizing anything at all. :x
