Right, I'm currently sat in my car waiting another 20 minutes so I can remove the airbag again.

Got a new wheel from Sopers Joe and replaced easily enough. Reconnected everything then ignition on...

Buttons still not working and now my airbag light is staying on?? Is this because I've cut and reconnected the power? Will it go off after a while?

Damn this bloody wheel issue!! After two units and a complete software update I can only assume it's the wiring now.

You either did one of 2 things:

1) Disconnected the airbarg while the ignition was on (or turned it on before reconnected, etc)
2) Did not reconnect it properly and so triggered it

Sadly it won't self reset so sort out the button function first then sort the airbag light out at a dealer or Indy

Hi CJ. Can't be number 1 as Ignition was never on before dismantling the wheel, and was never on before it was reconnected. Have since taken all apart again, check the connections (all fine), refitted airbag, connected battery and turned on - still have the light.

Got a slot at my local dealer on Tuesday so will get them to sort it - and investigate what the hell is wrong with my setup; I've literally done all I can :headbang:

Is the connection good for the aftermarket wire? Now that the airbag light is triggered is there a way of testing it all while the wheel is semi fitted? I remember when i fitted mine i was quite concerned about those plastic connector clips on the cable getting a good enough connection.

so still having problems?that's what always worries me if something is not right or cause some other issues while doing modifications 8)

Dreamer - not sure. I've checked it twice and seems to be plugged in correctly. Dont have the skills to check the current connection so have admitted defeat and am going to throw money at the problem with my local BMW garage.

Navid - Yeah, it's a real bastard. Typical in the grand scheme of things really. No airbag light probs the first time I fitted the first wheel then it appears this morning. Now I'm readying myself for the conversation on Tuesday when I take it to the stealer and they tell me they need to do a full diog on it again to reset, even though I got a complete software update last week with them and they know which reset its going to be. Getting rather fed up with this...

Frankly since the airbag light is on I'd take it all to bits and triple check everything and that the loom was correctly in place between the hub and connector X10170 Someone may have done something in it's prior life.

Dealer will sting oyu for diagnosis, wheel fitting and coding.

Would do CJ, but my wiring loom and hub connector diagnosis is a little rusty [non-existent] :(
Have ran out of options.

Im talking about the conection behind the light switches in the dash Inkey. That is unless you didnt fit the aftermarket cable.

Didn't think I needed an aftermarket cable since my manufacture date is Nov 2004. Do you have any other details/pics Dreamer?

I thought you don't need the wiring if the car was built before October 04,as yours is November, that might be the whole issue :(

I thought it was earlier than that Navid. According to sideshowbobs how-to, it says:

'If you do decide to fit the M sport wheel and your car was manufactured before September 2003, then you will also need to fit a retrofit cable which will enable the functions on the wheel to work.'

Also, the official BMW retrofit PDF states:

The following components must be removed first of all
Instrument cluster (cars before 09/03 only)
Steering column trim, bottom section (cars before 09/03 only)

So I should be more than okay. Plus of course, the white MF plug on the wheel has a natural home on my steering hub top right as it should do.

is this the one you are talking about behind the airbag?

has it got the pins inside?as if you check the ones (on mine) in the left are blank, the slot is there but connected to nothing.

Thats the one. Here's a pic I took yesterday...everything that needs to be there appears to be there which is the frustrating thing. I'm just not getting any power to the wheel.

pm me an email address and I'll send you the mfsw retrofit instuctions. they will make it clear what people are talking about with regards to retrofit harness.

In effect your photos show what's plugged into one side of the steering wheel. Your blue red and white wires just go to the switches each side on the spokes. You need to see the correct harness is fitted and goes from the rear of the hub boss to the correct connector. That can only be checked by pulling the instrument binacle out.

@ inkey$

I have the same problem as you and mine is built after 09/03 - i still need to fit the 'retrofit wiring harness' as i guess this feeds power for the MF buttons?

It's annoying and frustrating isnt it ranski. Hopefully CJ's PDf will shed some light as I assumed that being a Nov 2004 built car, mine would be all cool and plug'n'play.

I beleive every car has those pins in place - mine did, and it still needed the aftermarket cable.

Best way to check, is to look for the green plug that sits under the steering wheel column, and plugs into the rotating steeringwheel collar thingy.

Take this out, and make sure you have a wire connected for pins #9 & #10
If you don't have wires in those two pins, you need an aftermarket cable ;)
If you DO have them, then you dont, and something else is wrong.

(EDIT)
The green plug cant be seen in this photo, but it is situatued directly to the left of the red plastic bit you can see in this photo:
Pic7.jpg

ifaik, it's the ONLY plug directly underneath the column, and it's definately the only green one i saw... pull it out and have a gander before wasting money at the dealer
