Hi all,

I drove to Lincoln 2 weekends ago in the Z4 (first long journey) and stupidly tried to use my Factory Sat Nav with its 2004 Map DVD :headbang:

It took me an hour out of the way and was a complete nightmate (showed me driving through a field when i was on the M6 Toll!), i ended up pulling over and using my TomTom instead.

I am trying to find a newer Nav DVD without paying extortionate dealer prices without success. I also downloaded the 2008 Map but it didnt work, i think it's for the BMW iDrive system.

There are quite a few eBay sellers that have them, but none say they are compatible with the E85 and the sellers that i have emailed and asked dont want to commit to saying it definatley will or wont work!

if anyone could tell me what code or version of DVD is compatible that would be great!

Thanks

Nick

I think there £100 from the dealers with your old DVD...I could be wrong!!!

As for downloading the DVD, think you'll struggle to get a working copy!

£99 from the dealer with trade in indeed. Worth it in my opinion to get a legal version of it.

Alternatively, I got a late disk for my X5 by paying another forum member £20 to change it for my old OEM disk just before he traded his car in.

Agreed, and please keep in mind everyone, requests for illegal copies/torrents etc will not be tolerated on the forum

It is frustrating, for the £1500 or whatever it was for factory sat nav, pretty annoying not to have postcode search and up to date maps. I assume maps is a problem for all systems (does it cost that much to update a TomTom?) but in my view BMW should offer to update the firmware for free when servicing the car or something. They don't seem to do this as all the advice I have seen involves downloading your own (whether legal or not I don't know) and then burning the disc etc completely at your own risk.

At a whopping £100 for new maps I might even consider getting a TomTom or rival instead. I'm not convinced with the right maps the Sat Nav would take me the right way anyway!

If you find a legitimate cheaper way of updating your system please let me know!

Does the latest DVD have post codes on the it?

Do BMW have an upgrade to show where speed cameras are?

Annoying, I know, but I find the extortionate road tax in the UK annoying but I still have to pay for it.

By all means go and find illegal versions, all I ask is you don't discuss it on this forum. It puts us at risk, not to mention gives us a bad name. Thanks

If you want to get speed camera's on it, you have to do the following:

- Buy the updated disk for £99
- Copy / Edit the disk for personal use adding the speed camera's as way points. The how-to on that is on x5world.

Just a point to note that copied disks are known to freeze the satnav on occasions. I did not spend 45k on a car to not have OEM equipment in it.

For a much better warning system, I bought a Origin B2 that does all and more for camera's.

I wouldn't say I enjoy paying road tax neither, but if you think that is extortionate you could spend a year's worth of UK road tax in tolls on a SINGLE trip across France / Spain!

I dread to think how much I gave the French government over my year there, we don't make foreigners pay at all and road tax still probably works out cheaper.

MRol - the OP asked about the new maps, to upgrade to be able to search by Post Code the system actually needs a software upgrade. Whereas the maps will be £100 + your old one to exchange, I'm not sure there is a way to get BMW to upgrade your firmware to let you search by Post Code.

The X5 site you have been linked to has a lot of info on this. Basically to get the Post Code search (full Post Code not available by the way) there are update files to download and burn to disc etc but as has been said they are not guaranteed not to break your system. I'm not sure how legit it is neither, so obviously I am not recommending this and haven't done it myself.

LOL, sorry, I was just being obtuse in making my point. I do think we should make foreigners pay though (especially the French ;) )

Sorry I take any excuse to rant about the Euro road tolls!

I take the point and will bite the bullet at some point and buy the OEM update

I upgraded the operating system with the help of the threads. Really, really easy. I have no technical knowledge whatsoever! My 54 model which did not have postcode search or 3d perspective now has both : ).

I have got older maps though (07) so I might take the £99 plunge as well. Not much when you think of what is on the disk!

What do you get on the disc? Or is that a stupid question and you meant the maps?

I am told it costs £15 to update the maps on a TomTom and that the first update is free :fuelfire:

It's £15 to update if you pay for the annual map update service - so basically £60 a year whether they bring out a new map or not.

Any mapshare updates you have on your old maps will disappear once you upgrade a map, so you'll have to put any missing junctions, roads, turns, speed limits back in again.

There's a roundabout by me that has been there for 7 years, but is not on the latest maps - seems a bit silly to pay for an 'up-to-date' map that has more errors than your current one (if you include the mapshare corrections you've added over the years).

I only update mine every two years now.

I use both and I only get lost when I use the Tom Tom as the display is so small that I can not really see which route to take on a multi road crossover. The arrow sort of covers any of 3 possible roads which is a pain.

Then again, I only use the TomTom for the pre-planned car trips for meets as the OEM system can not be used for routes.

I managed to get hold of a 2009 Map DVD with 7 digit/letter postcode search and Speed Camera Database. I also upgraded the Software to the 3D Perspective view :)
