Well finally got myself organised and taking a week off work this week to take the Z on it's first long run out.

Day 1 Glasgow to Skye, Day 2 Skye to Toungue via Ullapool, day 3 Tongue to Inverness via Dornoch, Day 4 Inverness to Glasgow via Perth and Creif.

If anyone has done the west coast bit before, esecially the Skye to Tongue bit, appreciate if you would let me know if there are any roads to be avoided, or any must drives!

Will get some pics and post, only prob is the 108s are off for refurb and the std wheels are back on, bahh.

Stay away from the West Of Scotland it's a horrible place full of Local roads for local people,

Back home tomorrow a week early after 3 months away to Dumfries & Galloway, South West Scotland

LOL! You're definately fitting in up here, trying to keep the good roads a secret :D

Sounds like a good trip, just don't make the mistake of trying to cover too much ground per day:

Glasgow - Skye:
The A82 north from Balloch to Fort William, stunning scenery, road can be busy especially weekends. You MUST take the A830 from Fort William to Mallaig, then take the ferry onto Skye - much better than the boring bridge IMO.

Skye to Toungue via Ullapool:
That's too long a drive for one day IMO - remember it's mostly singlewidth roads in place. I'd suggest 2 days for that if you can afford the time. Take your time, taking in roads like the Bealach-na-Ba from Kishorn to Applecross (full or hairpins) and spending the night at Ullapool. Then, going from Ullapool to Tongue (or stopping just before Tongue in a place called Durness - not sure where you're staying, but there's a campsite in a stunning location in Durness...

Tongue to Inverness via Dornoch:
I used the A836 on my trip and just remember it's large singlewidth with passing places. Very scenic.

Inverness to Glasgow via Perth and Creif:
I take it you're using the A9? Come off north of Perth at Dunkeld (Perth's not got anything worth seeing), take the A822 south-west to Crieff via Amulree. Then from Crieff take the A823 to Yetts o' Muckhart, then back onto boring roads to Glasgow - more fun roads/more scenic options IMO.

Thanks Ally for
some great advice, as ever you find yourself
not completely in control of the whole thing - I need to be in Dornoch onthe Wed night and back home late Thursday hence to rush-job Tue (Skye - Tongue) but will
set off early Tue so not really in a rush.

It's being done on a budget so it's avoid the ferry's and overnight in youth hostels but hey aint done this before so looking forward to it

hi there, re ur 108s being refurbd, can u tell me where u got them done,as i live just south of glasgow, and have had no joy finding a decent place willing to refurb the 108 split rims, cheers

Craig, I'm going to have a go at refurbing them myself, so I've split the rims on three of them, but someone has burred four of the bolts on the fourth wheel (I bought them secondhand) so. I may have to do this one with the cantrell star in place

Unless anyone has any good ideas how to remove the burred bolts (tried slotting them with a dremmell but there ain't enough clearance at the tyre side to do it properly)

I did find one of the national refurb companies with a Glasgow agent that were prepared to refurb mine for £400 after haggling, but sorry can't remember who it was (try googling alloy refurb Scotland)

regards

Mike

Dave, thanks for the link.....despite the fact it's dropped about 2 inches of rain here today I'm really looking forward to this

may not be able to match your pics or the weather though !!!!
