3rd brake light

i pulled my boot down yesterday on my 05 z4 roadster and noticed the red 3rd brake light lens cover has come off :( does anyone know how much these are from bmw/used and wheres best to get one from, iv tried looking online but i cant seem to find them for sale anywhere!! any help much appreciated
 
Thats weird. Ive just finished washing mine and noticed it is loose and was sitting proud of the tailgate slightly. Wonder if this is something common or just a coincidence :?

Thanks for the offer acerboo, i would really like a mint condition one though just so this wont happen again. Think il ring my local dealer up and get a price from them, i hope it is around £20 :) i thought it would be more round 50ish!!

The clear one is about £55 (dealer). Not sure about the red.

I need a new one but undecided on clear or red. Both the ends have broke off of mine.
Would clear look ok on a silver car??

Personal taste. I still have red light on my silver zed.
 
I still need to get myself a new one as its loose. Got a quote from a breakers for £30+VAT of a car with 2k miles on it. Not sure whether to go with that or pay the £57 from the dealers for the clear one? What do you think will look best on sterling grey car, bearing in mind I havnt upgraded the rear lights so they are still red and orange? :|
 
I put a clear on my sterling grey before doing the clear rear lights and it looked fine :D

just tried to find a photo of mine from that time but I can't have taken any :(
 
imho clear is way better on Sterling grey and many have done the change on that colour. The red in general looks dated but there are some colours it may work better on.

End of the day though it's your car and whatever you want.

New or used. Since they break I'd go main agent for that small price difference and get the assurance of no cracks and the warranty on the part

Ive just been to the dealer, ordered a clear one at £46.00 + VAT, will be in stock friday :D

Do I require any special tools for the job?
 
I used a spanner (I think 8mm but not sure) to crack the nut and my fingers to twist them off. You can get at the back quite easily I seem to remember there's a plastic cover you can take off for access.
When you put on the new one don't overtighten it as they're liable to crack - I just tightened as much as I could with my fingers and left it.
 
The real reason to use a deep socket is that if you drop the nut inside the twin skin of the boot you've got a real task to retrieve it :thumbsup:
