Space Saver Wheel Cover

Hi all,

I bought a 17" space saver when I changed to non-RFTs as I like to know I can drive on whatever puncture I should get.

Just having it in the boot wasn't any good though as the rubber was scuffing up the boot carpet. After a bit of looking I found someone who sells custom made covers. Email your tyre size/dimensions and a few days later you get a nice custom made fits-like-a-glove cover. Handy thing is you can fit it such as to store the jack/brace etc in the wheel too (opposite way to below).

Materials and workmanship look good, strong stiching and elastic. Good deal for £16 delivered I thought from anne.baker3 [at] virgin [dot] net. Was in 2 minds about posting as it seems a bit of a lame thread after all the tasty mods I've seen tonight but thought it might be useful for others in the UK who have bought a space-saver.

Dave

Excellent daveg

I'm about to buy a sewing machine (don't ask...) but I doubt I could buy the material and make a cover like that for £16. Do we just email that person and sort it out that way? Is it someone's mum?! :D

Nice, thanks for that - at the price is a right bargain! Should be buying a space saver soon, certainly for my Italy trip. I may see if she'll make a small case for the jack as well. Wonder what else I might have in the boot that would be better in a pouch? Good find

Is that for you to do your own tailoring on the conversion? Not my mum unfortunately or I'd be on commission! This is the seller but apparently can take card orders over phone too (01427 616200):

Where to in Italy? I hadn't thought of the jack - that's a great idea. I know it's just a space saver but don't want it scratching unnecessary so wrapped mine in a rag! When you get yours find one with a tyre. I found someone selling a brand new wheel but it was quite tricky sourcing the right size tyre and apparently they only get made in limited batches. Suppose not many cars use a 17" space saver?

The conversion  although I can see uses for it on tailoring my own clothes as I'm a strange shape and usually need shirts, etc adjusted. Really just for making some additional bits like cushions, skirts for the seats to tidy up the appearance, etc. Things like the curtains, etc are hand-made by the conversion company - would be well beyond my sewing skill level (currently zero and staying that way - the wife can learn to use it :D ).

pawnsacrifice, I'd echo what daveg says about sourcing one with a tyre already fitted - I was lucky in picking up an unused complete wheel/tyre on ebay but I did once search for the tyres alone, very scare and not cheap.

daveg, Northern Tuscany, for a mate's wedding, in July. Thankfully Dave, Road Trip, is doing the same trip a few weeks later and is going to share some of his vast road tripping experience / ideas. Think I'll do the Stalvio on the way down, plus maybe one or two others... whatever Dave tells me to do :driving:

a11y, I like your devision of responsibility skill... or is that optimism?

Chaps, thanks for the tip on the wheel, will do. I think the wheel itself is only about £45 from the dealers! Seeing as we're on the subject, how much did you guys pick the wheels up for? Will be needing a 17 incher myself :D If my flipping rear carrier ever arrives :x

Sounds ideal - keep it quiet though or you'll have a load of requests for custom Z4 forum embroidered items. Actually - how much would you charge for mats!

Sounds good - took a look at that pass and it looks a bit hairy! The reason I ask is I want to go on a road trip this summer to Europe. Never been before but would love to find some great mountain roads to keep me happy and impressive scenery for the missus. Having not been before not sure how ambitious I can be with 5 days.

Just checked with the wheel and mine cost £15 and £10 delivery - it had never been taken out the box. Got lucky - saw it on eBay for collection and convinced seller to ship if I arranged courier. Tyre was £60 inc delivery from here. They were out of stock so sold me the (supposedly) last Continental equivalent in the country for an extra £10. I'd source the tyre first if you are going this route. To get a bargain just set a saved search on eBay for "BMW space saver". They come up quite a bit but carry a premium - Quarry MOT seem to have them often:

Or find a private seller for cheaper. Be careful though - some people just measure the wheel instead of checking the tyre. A 16" measures 17" rim to rim so careful they sell you the right size.

Hmmmm, wonder if she will do it in red?

Since she makes them I'm sure it's possible - worth an ask.

I had those two wheels saved after I saw this post... I think I bought the jack from Quarry, or maybe the locking wheel nuts. Either way, good service. Was going to see if I could back the other one this weekend.

Mailed Anne, sent her some dimensions for the jack bag. Will post back when I get a price. I'll probably get one ordered anyway if people want to see one before ordering. Once again, great find Dave!

Reference your European tour, it may be worth contacting Road Trip Dave. We had a chat at the North Wales meet (that you missed!) and he was saying that there are better roads than the Stalvio, but after Top Gear it's become the one to do. Definitely heading for one of those big long tunnels give the exhaust a workout :)

Genuinely I was slightly concerned about the spare wheel and suits both being in the boot - not that it would't be cleaned first.

that's nice, though i wish it came with a carry handle of some sort since i don't leave the spare in the truck at all times

Err, no!!!! Although that idea's added to the list for "things to try" id I ever fancy a change of career!

Pawnsacrifice: I paid £55 (I think) posted for my 17" space-saver via ebay. The (private) seller had it up as "collection only" but I found out the price for postage, contacted the seller, and they were happy to package it for me . That was over 12 months ago though.

Just an update on this, after some delay, should have a wheel cover and jack case sorted next week.

On the wheel front - didn't want to leave it too late, and didn't want to pay £85 for something that looked a little manky. So...
Bought a new 17" Space saver from Joe at Soper for £37
Bought an unused Volvo space saver wheel and tyre for £30 - it's the right size and loads cheaper than BMW ones.
HiQ in Henley (good bunch) put the valve in, swapped the tyre over and got rid of the Volvo wheel for £10
£77 for new kit

Will post pics of the jack case if Anne comes through.

Hurrah, all done!

Wheel cover arrived yesterday along with the jack case.

Jack case wasn't what I was expecting, but is actually better for it - basically a pouch sealed with velcro along the top side.

Good find DaveG
