Road Trip 2010 (Summer Holiday Plans)

This years holiday will be spent mooching about in Europe in the Z!

I'm going to have to put a bit more detail in it, but basically it's along these lines:
1) Jump on a Ferry to Dunkerque, then head towards the Nurburgring. I may choose to stop off at Bruges for a night, depending on timing, but I've been before so not too bothered about missing it.
2) Have a mooch about the museum at the Nurburgring and see what's in the car park, maybe have a blat around the track if it's quiet enough (open for evening sessions until the Friday).
3) Head for Stuggart (200~ miles from Nurburgring), check out the Porsche Museum and the Mercedes Benz Museum.
4) <200 miles to Munich, home of the BMW and the BMW Museum http://www.bmw-museum.com/2/webmill.php
5) Towards Lake Garda in Italy
6) Modena, Italy. The Galleria Ferrari (ok, ok, it's another Museum, but this time Ferrari)
7) At this point, I'm not sure. I may head for the coast in Italy and try and find somewhere nice to camp for a few days and get some time on the beach. Last time I did this I didn't find anywhere nice that I wanted to camp so I headed back to France and stayed on the coast near Perpignan. It's the wrong time of year to be going anywhere near the sea in Italy from what I can gather, it's likely to be busy. There's also Milan and Turin which would I'm sure be worth a visit.
7) The Col De Turini - I don't think this one needs any explanation :)
8) If I've not already had some time on a beach, then head to one in France for a chill.
9) Then a long slow mooch back home! :)

I've about 3 days left to plan before heading for a ferry, so any comments welcome :)

That sounds fab siftah - great choice of museums - but no Inglostadt / Audi ?

Planning on a slightly similar trip next year through Germany so will be really interested to her your views and tips. Enjoy. :driving:

Hmm, nope, I'm not a big fan of Audi's so not too bothered about missing that tbh :)

First time I've properly been to Germany, so it should be interesting - had a quick stop there last year but it was only a short hop across the border. I'll have to brush up my German in the car on the way over :)

Sounds like your taking the Z on a pilgrimage, back to the holy land

I guess so! I'm hoping to get the obligatory photo of it with the factory in the background, even though it'll be the first time it's ever been there :)

Hey,

I too will be setting off on my Euro trip in 3 weeks time.

My route will be a little different:

Stafford to Dover (stopping one night)
Early morning ferry from Dover to Calais.
Major run down to Annecy (near Geneva) stopping 2 nights.
Route De Napoleon down to south coast then across to Antibes (stopping a week).
Combination of twisty scenic roads and motorways heading to Salo near lake garda (stopping a week).
Blast through the alps stopping one night in North Switzerland somewhere.
Motorway blast to Brugges for one night,
Midday Ferry back home.

All in all I have about 2.5 weeks in the Z, I think it will be my farewell adventure in her... :( cant afford to keep her another year so may have to get rid next spring when prices start picking up. It will be a sad day, its the only car in my group of freinds that can keep up with a mates remapped Audi A3 2.0 turbo (such a boring car in my opinon), and I love the fact that people still have to stop and look at it, even though its a 7 year old car.

Sounds like you're doing a similar loop to me but the other way round too! :)

Have you booked in anywhere or planning on just turning up? You'll be missing the Italian holiday season by the sound of it, so hopefully be OK?

What's the area round Antibes like? I've only ever stayed further down the coast, so not sure whether it'll be good for camping or whether it's a bit like the Cannes area (bit too busy for my liking)

Sounds like a great send-off for the car anyway - a road trip you won't forget.

Nice one Siftah, I am of course very envious
Enjoy and take care.

Excellent

Really want to get back there myself - like the idea of the museums... may use that as a basis for next year :driving:

Heard that Milan isn't actually that great, went to Verona last year and that was lovely. Or you could carry on past Milan to Como - not a sea beach, but no doubt very nice. I was at Lerici the other month, that was nice, if a little small (possibly cramped).

I don't think you can go too far wrong to be honest. Only thing, lots of photos and / or video!

Have a great time.

Hi,

Yes its a similar loop I think, but I do have a few day drives scheduled in, The Canyon De verdon is supposed to have a good ring road, and I also have a few day trips around the Italian lakes planned. I think I could be looking towards 4K miles.

We have booked hotels for stays that are short (1-2 nights) and booked an apartment in antibes and a cottage near lake garda. I think Antibes will be pretty busy, but its more of a medievil walled type town I think. But it will serve as a base to explore the area. I will be sure to drive around monaco in the Z before heading to Italy!

Have you found a good pass from North Italy into Switzerland at all??

Kind regards

Sounds good Siftah,

If it's any help I'm in Italy at the moment (until tomorrow, YIPPEE) be it down in Naples at the moment everyone has been on holiday for the last 2 weeks, returning to work on Monday 23rd August, so maybe the beaches etc may not be quite as busy you think, just don't take my word for it  .

Just don't venture to far south in Italy the raods and the driving deteriorates the further south you come, there bloody idiots don here.

Sounds a cracking route and well-planned in terms of distances per day, etc.

Porsche museum is tremendous, well worth a visit even if you're not a mad Porsche fan. We spent quite a few hours there last year. Plus the underground carpark had some interesting metal (plus our van...). I'll do the BMW museum new time for sure though.

Few days to spare - stop in at Reims on the way back north? Track down the old circuit for some ambience and a great photo location? Then have a night out drinking champagne on the town tours

Good news that Richard, I keep getting conflicting details on the Italian holiday season, so fingers crossed it'll be quieter once we get there - I've a campsite planned near the Cinque Terre, so we'll head for there and see how it is.

I like that idea too a11y, night out in Reims sounds like a plan

I've just finished packing the car, ferry is booked for 2am Monday so I'll be leaving about 8pm-ish tonight. I've also managed to pick up a passenger - one of my best mates, Whirley, he's going to be tagging along for the ride :)

Col De Turini is a great piece of road and one of several good Cols in the area. If you are there you may as well drop into Monaco and drive the GP circuit and then get to the Route Napoleon which is my personal greatest road of all time. Enjoy.

I plan to take the Route Napoleon from north to south. How far north does it run? I have a stopping point at Annecy for afew days then was planning on heading for Grenoble as I think the route napoleon starts there?, then I will take it to the sout coast.

Grenoble is as far north as you go on the route and it goes almost to the coast at Cannes south. There is a section between Sisteron and Grenoble that is new and not very interesting, the rest is wonderful.

Been you Bruges before...? Give it a miss and try Ypres. Lovely town with a nice town square full of bars and resto's and WW1 museum.

Sounds like a fabulous trip. I did this last year (Stuttgart and München ~ Mercedes, Porsche and BMW), except I also visited VW in Dresden the Glass Factory and BMW in Leipzig. You will have a great time. If you like to get a little taste you can visit my Picture Album Site here ---> http://web.me.com/solgain/Dieters_Travel_Site/Welcome.html

PS. You need to edit your last points above 7, 8 and 9 to 8, 9 and 10 ~ unless you are still undecided about 7 at tis point :)
