Do you Live in London and Only do City Driving?

What MPG do you get? I only get 19mpg (actual) and everyone is saying that's really crap. Please state which Z4 you have and if you're referencing what the car is stating or what you actually calculated yourself as the car over estimates. Thanks.

Sounds about right for typical London driving to me. I get 26mpg or so when doing mainly short runs, but it's mostly on fairly open B roads with some decent stretches to hep keep the figures up. My guess is that if I lived in London I would see significantly lower figures, certainly based on the few drives I've made through the centre.

Does not sound right to me. 90% of my driving is hard work trying to get across London on the south circular and I get an average 31mpg. When I do travel on motorways it ranges from 50 mpg at 55mph to 36 mpg at 70 mph. I regularly reset my counter so these are recent and accurate.

3.0i roadster, 2003 plate.

Obvious things to check would be tyre pressure, idling engine speed, driving style, and if you have house bricks or a dead body in the boot.

I had a period where all I was doing was crawling into Leeds every day (OK not London but similar to your journeys :D)

Same as you, pre-facelift 3.0. Used to get 21-23 mpg (tops). Calculated using receipts. IIRC Dannyboy used to get a similar MPG crawling into Manchester every day.

Eh? 50mpg at 55? Is that confirmed or just what the computer says? I was impressed when I got my computer to read 43mpg and it took some serious effort! That said my computer seems to be reasonably accurate!

Did the 50 mpg this weekend. Was travelling north on the m1 through the night and on no particular hurry. I tried a range of speeds, resetting the computer then driving for 10 miles or so. Yep I was bored.

As it happens I got the numbers a bit wrong above. The best I got over a reasonable dslistance was 46.3, and the 50 could only be achieved if cruising along in the slip stream of a truck. The real eye opener for me was how badly the mpg deteriorates at higher speeds. If you have the time and patience you can easily get a 1/3 more miles per gallon on motorway driving.

Maybe I need to get out more...

blimey i live out in the sticks so hardley any crawling and only have a 2.0 and computer says 34 mpg which is infinitely better than the 325 i had before couldnt get that over 28 :o

I only use my 2.0 litre for fun and the computer says 37 - 39 mpg. :driving:

Mine's an ///M and often I drive mine the other way across London on the south circular averaging only 17-18mpg... but I do enjoy maximum G acceleration, even if my top speed is only 25 mph. My 320d will easily reach over 45mpg on the same journey with zero G acceleration all the way :D

On a recent roadtrip in France I averaged 25mpg over 1500-2000 miles on a combined route of motorways and around town, whilst I saw only 9mpg on my last track day (in the ///M not the 320d).

Thanks for the replies...

ferrelscent, sorry, but noooo way you can get 31mpg on the south circular unless you drive reeeaaalllyyy slowly in high gear and concentrate real hard when doing so to not accelerate much.

gannet, I was driving slowly. :)
but i'm not that bad... somewhere in the middle i think.

ballington31, good idea... i think mine is around 16mph!!

Not sure what to say to this, except that I do get 31...that's why I said it. I think driving style is key. If I rev the nuts off it and boot it from every set of lights I too can achieve low 20's but in London you get nowhere fast so I chill out and go slow.

My trips from noth london to south london via the a40/ a406 (25mile stop start/ 2 hour journey) returns over 25mpg based on petrol... the computer does say 30mpg though

Same. I've seen it read 16 in town before, but usually better than that.

I'm in West London, mostly city driving but she gets opened up on longer trips a few times a month.

i'm only getting 29mpg with my 2.0i in London!! :o

but then if i change my driving style and really care about mpg then i should have kept my astra diesel.
