Had the camera in the car to film the performance of the winter tyres... for those that have seen it...

This is a repost but I'm so impressed I thought it was worth posting again. Although, this was quite a gentle test.

This was originally posted with an Eisenmann exhaust video which has been split out - given the interest in tyres, thread now:

BTW, that's what Peddy is referring to when he mentions "quads".

Good videos... Now I'm trying to convince myself I don't need quads.

How was the traction with the tyres? Did it ever go off when you had the foot down in the video?

Traction was really impressive. I had hoped that they winter tyres would be this good, but thought they would fall short. I did get it to spin a little when provoked, but the TC just cut in as it would with summer tyre in normal conditions. Didn't lose traction at all in that video, but it was my trip on the white stuff so I wasn't pushing it too much.

Wow thats impressive... Mine wouldnt have budged a smeggin inch on that driveway

PS. LOVE the seat results pawn! Cba to find the thread again lol

EdButler, yep, the tyres, so far, have been awesome. Last year I had to dig the drive completely if I wanted to go anywhere.

Re the seats... - thanks, am very happy!

those tyres are incredible!
no digging for me, i just got myself an old vw polo for the bad weather, the missus didnt want the winter set of wheels blocking the kitchen, (sold them a while back) ... although she was happy for me to block the drive with another car. good thinking.

Nice video....
Winter tire make a HUGE difference and are really the difference between being able to drive in the snow or sit stuck in your driveway... :)

Anyone know of any Tyres in stock that would fit standard M wheels?
Mytyres is showing availability of Pirelli Sottozero tyres in the 225/45 and 255/40 sizes for the ///M - but they're about £200 a corner.

If you're happy to go with 225/40r18 all round then you can get either the Pirelli Sottozero for £140/corner from Tyretraders.com or Vredestein Wintrac xtreme for £140 a corner from Mytyres.co.uk.

Surely 225s all round simply wont fit on the rear rims?
That's the size BMW offer for winter tyres for the Z4M!

They'll 'fit', but you won't get any protection from light scuffs with that narrow a tyre.

You could always by a 2nd hand set of slightly narrower 18" wheels just for winter tyres.

Anyone seen these?

Vauxhall stock them £65 for set of two, thinking of getting a set to try

There isn't an official size listed for the rear ///M tyre - but from doing measurements of the tyre sizes they are stated to fit, I calculate a 685 size should fit the rear.

Remember to keep to below 30mph when you use them, and don't drive on anything other than snow/ice/slush as you'll ruin them very quickly.

You can use them on all 4 tyres if you wish to help with the front end grip (for braking & turning), but it's mainly the rears that will really struggle with grip.

Where I am, I'd only put them on for 100 yards and then I'd have to take them off again before hitting the dual-carriageway.

you have convinced me to get a set of winter wheels and tyres now.... stupidly decided to take the Z down to london.. now i cant go anywhere.. had some success loading the boot with over 100kg of salt bags... but still pretty shocking...

That video is great. I've never personally seen so much snow on a road before, would love to experience it sometime.

Nice work - you seem to be carrying some amount of speed on those snow-covered lanes

I've still yet to properly test the winter tyres on the Z4, but the Nankang SV2s on the van have seriously impressed me in proper snow so far.
