Oil Service Due - 1650 Miles

Ok - so my oil service is due in 1,650 miles. Chances are, I'm not really going to drive the car much until the Breamar Forum run on the 25th August. The last service was a little over 12 months ago now, so a 12 monthly oil change wouldn't go amiss.

Now, given that the oil service is around £120-160 from a main dealer - I don't mind taking the car to John Clark's in Dundee, which is the closest main dealer to the car's permanent home. I hate John Clark's with a passion, and expect that they'l' quote me £25,459 for repairs that I don't want, and don't need. Buy hey ho. The nearest BMW specialist is around 160 mile round trip, so that's not an option.

Should I get it serviced before the forum run, or after (when the service interval indicator says it's due)? Alternatively, would an intermediate oil change do the trick for now, and then get it serviced when it's due.

I'm quite relaxed about all the options, but thinking I'll try and put it in this weekend at the stealers...

Opinions please

I'd get the oil service done when service indicator says it's needed. Don't see any need for doing it before if the oil is only 12 months old. When was the brake fluid last changed? That should be every two years.

Had an inspection 2 done in June last year. Brake fluid was changed then

Who's the specialist you mention? Although I've not yet hit 0 on the service me now counter, I've been delaying booking it because I just don't trust the dealers in Central Scotland. Past history hasn't been exemplary. I'm also going to replace the tyres before hand as I know they are low, and I can't be arsed with the hard sell I'll get flog me new ones that I won't want (ie the standard RFT's). Call my cynical but I really find it hard to believe all the repairs needed once it's on the jack/hoist were actually present and necessary when the car was dropped off to them....

There's one called B for BMW in Clydebank, or one in Edinburgh that is a German car specialist - but I can't remember the name. Either one is at least 160 mile round trip for the zed :(

Totally agree re main dealers. My Indy (non BMW specialist) sorted my brakes and drivetrain noise for half of what BMW quoted just to have the brakes done. John Clark seem determined to quote me for unnecessary repairs every visit. My car has been MOT tested and passed since John Clarks said I needed new discs and handbrake work done. Dubious.

By and large the 'stealers' are hurting at the moment with the lack of sales and therefore servicing/repairs.
Any chance they get an actual motor on the ramp they're going to go to town in an effort to garner some revenue.
When I had the problem with my cracked alloy and I phoned them up to ask for options, by the time I put the phone down they'd virtually booked me a low loader to get the car to them, then an evaluation inspection, etc, etc. by that time the bill was already past £600 and that didn't include a new alloy... :)
So I politely declined their 'generous' offer and went after the culprits instead.

The garage in Edinburgh you mentioned is the Village Garage http://www.villageedinburgh.com/ and have a good reputation with BMW's. Owner was a BMW trained engineer I believe. If I remember rightly, there are a few members on here that use and recommend him

Why not just change the oil and filter yourself, much much cheaper and not difficult.

Just use up the last wee dregs of usefulness from the oil othe run and get it done afters

24 sleeps to go :D

Adamski,

As others have mentioned try Village I have used them previously and they are very good. The owner is indeed ex-BMW. The other guy I have used in Edinburgh is Deutsch Marque (www.deutschmarque.co.uk/) and they are a tad more expensive but good. There is another guy down in Slateford Rd called "Brian Millar Auto's" ex Porsche Mechanic with a very good rep.

I have the same issue! I have a really great condition 05 plate 2.5i with only 32K. The previous owner dropped it off at Menzies Stirling for the servicing in a "do your worst" fashion and judging by the invoices they did, oil service, x2 tyres, new front discs / pads = £1400.00

I have got the BMW insured warranty, it is the only reason I get it serviced at the dealers. Seriously considering going for a what car warranty and using an indy.
