First Big M Tour

Road Trip

Thought you folks might be interested in a road trip I've been on for the last 2 weeks. My first big trip in the M.

Here goes, hope you enjoy :)

The plan this year was to have a look at the central/southern region of France, somewhere we had not seen much of in the past, then on down to the French Riviera. From here we would head north into Italy, then Switzerland, and back into France for a couple of days before heading home. I had also tried to make this a more leisurely (maybe not the right word here) trip by staying for 2 nights in most places, and reducing the total mileage from the 4000 miles we usually clock up. As usual we're always on the lookout for car related stuff en-route :)

After speaking to a few people about the best route from the NW down to the chunnel I decided to take the M6 toll, M42, M40 route. It worked out really well and despite heavy rain for most of the 300 mile trip we arrived at hotel in Ashford at 23:45, the trip taking us 5hrs plus a 30min break at the services.

Day 1 - Calais to Magny Cours - 411 miles

We left the hotel for the short drive to the chunnel to catch the 9am train

As has become tradition now we stop a the old Reims circuit for lunch.

As we're travelling south on the A26 we are passed by a group of about 12 Lotus Elise, Exige VX220's. The all have a Stelvio 2008 tour sticker on the side. We convoyed with them for about half an hour which was great fun and broke up the monotony of the trip. Unfortunately our camera was in the boot so we have no pics, but thought some of you folks might know about the trip? We left them at Troyes southwest for Nevers.

After a long day and over 700 miles in 24hrs we arrive at our hotel which was located right next to the F1 GP circuit at Magny Cours

Day 2 - Magny Cours to Tarn Gorges - 225 miles

Not sure why, but I look like a midget in this picture

I had planned to visit the volcanos of the Puy de Dom but when we got there we found that the road to the top was closed between 10am and 6pm. The only way to the top was via a minibus. We didn't have time for that so moved on disappointed.

We did manage to find the old race track at Thedes where there was a trackday held by Lotus owners. The circuit looked awesome and very challenging (info here)

2878705767_dd9f11dbf9_o.jpg

To be honest I wouldn't recommend any of the roads we've driven so far, as "driving roads". The surfaces were quite poor and I was continually dodging lumps and potholes. There are roads I would recommed later in the trip and I will be sure to let you know about them

Thaks for the replies, glad you're enjoying it.

Love the avatar 2dogs :)

OK, back to the trip -

Day 4 - Tarn Gorges to Gordes - 172 miles

Today we leave the Massif Central region and heat east to Gordes in Languedoc - Roussillon

Took this pic from the hotel room window with 10 x zoom

2882946784_e6b73790f6_o.jpg

It's a fair drive from here and we headed straight across country. Once again the road surface was poor, and there is nothing I can recommend. Lovely scenery though
2882111347_cb56843668_o.jpg

This is the ancient equivalent of the Millau viaduct, and equally inspiring.

2000 years ago over 1000 people worked for 5 years on the construction of the Pont du Gard.
2882947072_08b530614a_o.jpg

The objective was to bring water to the city of Nîmes via a 50km long aqueduct. Built on three levels, the Pont is 49 m high, and the longest level is 275 m long.

Negotiating Avignon at rush hour was no fun, but we eventually made it to or hotel for dinner in Gordes

Day 5 - local driving - 115 miles

Leaving Gordes
2883094988_67125d3eba_o.jpg

As I was getting back into the car after taking the pic above I noticed a large moth that had met it's end in my grill. The car was getting pretty messy at this stage
2882258443_f44a5807f1_o.jpg

After being so disappointed with the quality of the roads up to now, I was resigned to the fact that maybe there were no decent roads around this part of France. My one last chance would be this
2883095200_a864ece0a3_o.jpg

I saw this video a couple of years ago and knew it was a road I had to go and drive
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zzc2ugMoujY

Mont Ventoux - Oh My God, what a road. It seems like a never ending uphill battle against the sweeps and turns. The surface is perfect, every bend is lined with a double row of Armco giving the feel of a race track. Care was needed for the cyclists making the gruelling lung busting slog to the top, and those that we returning from the top, but what an awesome road. I don't have many pics as Kathryn was holding on too tight and was too scared to let go and take pics.
2882259947_99b1c83ff3_o.jpg

About 3/4 of the way up the road emerges from the trees into a lunar like landscape
2883094054_fcccd48d74_o.jpg

and before you know it you hit the summit at over 6000ft.

IMO the north side was better, offering more stopping places and a better view of the canyon. But hey, it's still a great place to be.

We leave the B road to cross the Route Napoleon then continue east to Gourdon. On this section of road I only saw one other car. A great section and highly recommended.

We arrive at the hotel about 7:30pm after another long day, and are welcomed by a great view down to Monaco from the hotel room.

As we were checking in to the hotel another English couple with a young baby arrived at the same time and they joined us for dinner at a restaurant across from the hotel. After chatting for a while we found they too (Rebecca and Matthew) were fellow car enthusiasts, owning a Lotus Elise and a 993 Porsche 8)
