Smart Top module review

Well after getting my Z back from the dealer to try and fix a leaking roof i was itching to fit my smart top module. After being VERY disappointed with the just roadster wind deflector i was holding high hopes for this little bit of kit.

I firstly checked it was running the latest firmware via the USB and PC software, all was already upto date so that was good. I then decided to configure the module for the settings i think i will use. Most of the default settings are how you would want them, i think the only 1 i changed was when/how the wing mirrors fold in after an unlock/lock.

The Install!

The unit came with the install instructions for a E93 but a quick look on the mods4cars website i found the instructions for the Z4. Following them was easy and i must have been into the roofing wiring loom within 20 mins. tool the big roof loom out of its housing, placed in the bypass loom connected the smart top module....all easy. The module had a steady green light, the instructions said it should be flashing to show its getting can-bus data but thought not to much off it.

s**t PANTS time! before putting the boot back together though i would test. Pop my key back in the ignition and the idrive nicely displayed a roof motor failure, please take to dealer blah blah blah. O crap  I had read before that the bypass loom can be abit tricky to get seated and secured properly. So removed all and put the original wire back in, still an roof error.  .

I started to get abit worried. But decided to keep trying. I now realize my problem. The wiring loom is held in by a swing sort of lock. You have to push it all the way down to release the loom from its holding. When i was putting in the bypass loom/putting the original back in i wasnt pushing the little lock thing all the way down when putting in back in the housing hense it wasnt locking properly.

Put the module back in and result flashing LED on it. tested and all worked as planned. Where you put the smart top wiring loom is the next tricky bit. How they do it in the instructions just ant going to happen, there are far far to many wires to jam it in there. After about 10-15 mins i did figure a place it went ok-ish. Put the boot trims back together. The trim does stick up a tiny bit there the loom is hiding but its more i know its there, anyone else looking would never see it.

Left the usb cable connected and hid behind trim for easy of updating/configuring unit. TBH you can update the unit settingw easy using the indicators in a special mode.

All in all though im very happy with the module, everything works as expected and love the little touches it brings. Auto folding wing mirrors, auto unlock after key removal and already proved useful roof down when moving at a quick changing set of traffic lights :)

I'm thinking of getting one of these for the e89....

any thoughts...The review by Jonny seems pretty positive.

Thats where i got mine from ppcgb.

Great service, couple emails keeping me informed about stock/delivery. They even gave me the PDP delivery drivers name who was going to deliver it lol, neat little touch i thought.

I can vouch for this system/module. It is indeed great. I must say, it is probably the best and my favorite mod on my car so far.

Wow! Super quick delivery! ordered yesterday and arrived today... off outside to fit it.

Wow very quick delivery, mine took about 5 days to come. Although as i didnt have the car it wasnt to much of a bother and they did say they was awaiting stock.

Good luck with the install and take your time

being an absolute retard when it comes to anything technical (aside from in my job as an IT engineer), how much would i expect to pay an averagely competent garage to install it if i decide to get one?

What is the separate box, is that the unit itself? I thought that was built into the cable?
the white box is empty (now) the black Y shaped harness will plug into the existing wiring loom connector & the tail of the Y plugs into the smart top box.
I'll upload a couple if more detailed pics in a moment

It REALLY isnt that hard, Imagen a garage would take half an hour to install but they are as likely to mess it up as you ie very unlikely.

I could take the unit out in under 10 minutes easy now.

To me the worst bit apart was finding somewhere to put the additional wiring harness, but this was only 10 mins of faffing about.

If i get a chance over the weekend/its not pissing it down i will take some pictures of my install. Only reason i didnt in first place was it was getting dark and looked like it was going to rain so i pushed on and just got it working and boot put back together.

Maybe moonshine will be kind enough to take a few during his install.

ok, thats it fitted & working. it took an hour in total from start to test. inc dodging a couple of rain showers when the car was in bits!
Similar experience to Jonny, i.e buttock clenching worry as I got a steady green light & a roof failure warning as a rain shower started!
I took a bit of faffing to get the solid green light to start flashing... i dont know what i did to get it to flash, but ut is working now.
i now have one touch roof open/ close, open/ close up to 19mph, auto mirror fold when lock & auto unfold when drivers door is opened and all windows up on one click of the master window switch.
I took some photos, but to be honest, they are v. similar to the ones in the installation instructions.

To be honest, the hardest part for me was removing the stupid screw tabs that hold the carpet/lining. Those are stubborn little pieces of .... I actually had to use a string to wrap around one of it and pull with force, which ended up with screw flying somewhere and just disappeared. :headbang:

I didn't have any major issues with these, i used a trim removal tool and they were relatively straightforward.
I cant quite see the need to access the roof from the half open position. I think it could be done just as effectively with the roof closed & access via the open boot

i take it the picture before the roof fail is before you put the harness in? i cant seem to see it :?

Ive hid my USB connector behind this panel

no... the roof fail was with the harness in.. before the light started to blink... I didn't take a photo of the harness in.. i can nip out and take one... it has stopped raining! :)

Just wondered how you managed to get your in. I sort of had to wedge mine between the row on connectors, defo not where the picture in the instructions put it. The module is taped on the chassis behind the trim near when the USB cable comes out.

Does anyone know what these parts are for? One of these slots are empty on my Z4 and it is where I put the module in.
