Boring but practical(?) pics for the 2009 Z4

Hi all

As explained elsewhere I am a noob to sports cars so can't contribute much there. However I am off work with a cold and my Z4 is grounded due to import procedures in a new country - roll on monday, so I thought I would take a practical look around the motor and take some pictures.

I found some of the choosing of options really obscure at my Dealer (and on-line), hope this helps a couple of people out. WARNING these are not sexy pictures!!

COMFORT ACCESS OPTION
-------------------------------
I got this. Remote/key stays in my pocket for
- unlocking the car
- opening the boot
- starting the engine
- and you simply touch under the door lock with your finger to lock the car up when needed.

When stationary with top down it also gives you a 'double click' option on the remote which half brings the roof up, allowing full access to luggage compartment. It is quicker than going all the way, takes around half the time. Useful? Only if you are happy leaving the car parked with the top down on a regular basis...

BOOT SPACE
---------------
Following images are of the boot space with hood up and down respectively. Note the sliding panel must be down and in place for the roof to retract. TAKE NOTE you cannot store anything to the left or right of that pull down panel in those handy looking spaces or you will BEND YOUR ROOF. Having said all that, I got 2 medium suitcases in with top down (just about) which provided for me and an averagely shoe-crazy girlfriend for a 3 week break.

There is a very small boot compartment on the left which is safe to use with top down, only just found this, don't get too thrilled...

'THROUGH STORAGE' & 'EXTENDED STORAGE' OPTIONS
----------------------------------------------------------------
These have been less than clear options on the Z4. In essence both are to do with extending your storage possibilities. They allow you to open up a hole between the boot space and the car interior. If you do not purchase either of these options the wisdom so-far appears to be that the space is blocked and cannot be opened from the car interior. Following information is gathered from my own browsing and a forum thread here

Through Storage Fitting
----------------------------
Here is the 'Through Storage' fitting shown from boot and car interior. It is designed to take 2 pairs of skis, 2 snowboards, or other long objects. I am dubious about the snowboards until shown otherwise due to the width.

The flap inside the luggage compartment drops down and the bag you can see unfurls into the car interior. There is also a ski rest for inside the luggage compartment which I had previously removed. This allows the skis to poke through the centre column, bagged, and according to BMW, safe and secured.

The fitting is removable. This is what the space looks like without it. Quick access to small items at luggage rear is possible. I put the camcorder and camera there on our road trip.

Extended Storage Fitting
----------------------------------
There was another mysterious package in our boot when I got the car, not mentioned in the manual. Opened it up today, turns out to be a little shelf unit for the space. Looking at other threads I think it comes when you get 'extended storage'. Will try using it for a while. Pic below viewed from car interior.

The 'Extended Storage' option also gives you various nets and places to put small stuff in the interior.

------Net by the passenger footwell------------------------pull out storage in the door-------------opening underneath light control-------------net across back------

Additionally you get nets on the rear of the seats and coat hooks behind the seats.

There is also a standard compartment in the dash (no option purchase needed) for those of us who cannot afford over £2,000 for sat-nav : (

USB AUDIO INTERFACE OPTION
------------------------------------
Here it is inside the arm-rest, with cupholder (wow...). Note the additional 12v power outlet as well as 3.5 aux in and USB. I've not played with this yet but my initial impression is what a lousy placing. I cannot get to these areas without opening the arm-rest. Not so much problem for a fully iDrive controlled mp3 player perhaps. But I was considering attaching my TomTom to the aux in for over the speaker directions and bluetooth phone. Guess I should have bought that ridiculous Sat Nav.. Oh and all those pricey bluetooth options too... As it is I would maybe have to drill a hole in the armrest somewhere to get a cable in. Any thoughts?

STANDARD FITTINGS
------------------------
For the real geeks amongst us I took a pic of the triangle - attached to boot lid

And the contents of the first aid kit!

Finally, for those who braved it to the end, here is a reward, a shot of the engine compartment :D

Well that's a couple of hours of my life I won't be getting back! Hope it was of use to somebody out there

what a fantastic post - could be useful for anyone trying to sort through the options minefield!

Hope your cold gets better soon...

Nice to see so thorough a photo tour! Those cup holders are the like ones in my old 325Ci and our X5--SO much better than the delicate, in-the-way things in my E86. One has already broken, so she goes in Friday for a fix.

The storage compartment under the light switch is the one miss the most had this on my last two 3 series, ideal for garage keys etc.

Thanks for all the comments guys, made it worthwhile doing.

To complete the geek-fest I took one more photo today. (my serious 'man-flu' symptoms continue...). These are the 2 'trolley' luggage pieces that DID fit in the space when the roof was down. Antler call these 'medium' suitcases.
My estimated size for these is around 60cm length, 40cm width and 28cm depth. Beware my measurements, this was a tight fit on width and depth.

The boot is quite deep so they go in flat and horizontal facing you, one at the rear, the next at the front. See below for my amusing photoshop work...
(I really couldn't be bothered to go load up the car!). There was also a litle room on one side to shove in loose shoes, camera bags and the like.

That's all for now. Before anyone asks I have no information, and utterly no interest concerning golf-bags...

If you will all now excuse me, I will go and get a life :D

Great write up! Do you think police dogs could smell the contents of this compartment? :?

Isn't there a small tunnel shaped into the base or cover of the armrest to pass a cable thru when it is closed?

My Ford company car (God how I hate driving it just after I drove my Z!) has those same outlets inside the armrest, but with two tunnel shaped channels to pass decent size cables thru.

Wow, good info. The shelves in the ski hatch thing look interesting, do you think many things will stay on them whilst you're driving, or is there too much room at the side of them?

What do you think of the dash top compartment = it always feels cheap to me :(

There is a nice little door in front of the shelves in the ski-hatch opening - so nothing can escape, and also contents are away from prying eyes!

decent size cables thru.

Didn't spot one but it would seem sensible. Will give it a closer inspection. The armrest also locks with the outer doors so I thought there would be no gaps given for easy prying open.

Agreed, the shelves have a smart door in front of them. And agreed, not so smart is dash top compartment - that's called 'should have bought our SatNav' - again...

Another point of annoyance unless we've missed something. Check out the pic showing the door storage above. It is passenger side and has only one window button. According to my better half this only operates the main window and not the little one at the rear. Now I'm all for driver control, but being asked to 'put the little window up' all the time is a little grating, and stupid.

Ref the small rear window and single button on passenger side. Does a second pill on the window button not close the rear quarterlight?

It does on the Merc SL which has a similar arrangement and only one button for each side.

I don't think that small rear window would be of practical use for the passenger anyway. Seems more aesthetic than anything, so driver control would be appropriate.

Cheers, looks like a handy option then.

Will take a look myself. Would seem sensible, but I was told she had tried all the combinations she could think of..
On the SLK you can't operate these windows independently, you push/pull the roof switch twice to raise/lower them, you can't raise them when the roof is down, only the fronts. Not sure about the SL, if you can have them up with the roof down or not.

I'm with Rabman though, didn't think they'd be much use up anyway, or does it make a difference?

According to the better half it does make a difference.

Being a male I tend to go for all windows down whenever possible. But every partner I ever had always gets colder quicker than me. Whenever we hit cloud cover or shadows in the Alpine part of our road trip it was time for windows up on her side. Imagine the wind from the small window whips around the back of the neck.
